Are you one of those that thought the Wasteland project (Half-Life mod) was dead? Well think again, because Gaist and his crew is back with Wasteland HL2. That's right, they are now using the Half-Life 2 engine to fuel their post apocalyptic mod, here's more info:

Well it's been a couple of slow news days hasn't it, but that all ends today. PsychoSniper informed me of the weekly update from the Fanout project, here's the news:

Weve recived news on our missing leader, EnderAndrew. Seems his PC died. He'll return with a new PC once he gets one.
Were sketching out the democity, Estes, and have got a decent idea of its layout. Mapping will commence shortly, most likley. The starting city will likley be approx 10 differnt maps, though it could be more or less depending on what we cut from the demo. I'd show some pics of the sketches, but most of em are simple MSpaint drawings that wont make sense to anyone execpt for the team members, since were imersed in the lore of the design doc.
Were basicly still in preproduction, but were getting steady, albiet slow, progress.

A recent news update on The Fall's website has highlighted two reviews of The Fall by European PC gaming magazines, with rather positive scores. They have included a selection of favorable quotes from the reviews, but obviously take these with a grain of salt.
PC Games and PC Action, two of Europe's biggest PC gaming magazines, are featuring reviews of The Fall - Last Days of Gaia in their current issues.Interesting, the scores are good, despite the problems indicated by all the patches. It would be much more enlightening to have the full text of the review rather than a few quotes picked by the developers.
The game scored a 83 out of 100 in PC Action.
"Seldom has a post-apocalyptic world been more exciting than the wastelands in The Fall."
""Oh my lady, I'll save that artifact!" - fortunately, quests like this are not present in The Fall."
"Tons of humorous dialogue."

...if you're waiting for news on the English release of the game, don't expect an announcement tomorrow. Or on the next day. There still are things to be sorted out, details to be debated. Etc. Etc. Etc. And keep in mind we right now have to focus on the German version the game. Seriously, there's no release date that's being kept secret or something like that.Righto, I guess all those patches takes time.
I'm fully aware that you guys are growing impatient, but at this point there simply isn't anything to be announced. Take note though that there will be an English version. If you're running across someone who claims the opposite, you should rather ask him/her to share a bit of whatever he/she is smoking.

*Cries* I hate you, Bethesda, you make such great games! *Runs into the night screaming*Right, someone needs to lay off the sugar.
While the gaming community is still wondering whether or not Fallout 3 will be released in 2005, we are hoping, and are in fact quite enthusiastic it will be. After the closure of the Black Isle Studios and the cancellation of the game, Bethesda has obtained the rights to both develop and publish the sequel to one of the most appraised RPG series of all times. Due to the turbulent history of the title, it is not surprising only scarce details are known about Fallout 3. In any case, the Bethesda team is, as they put it, overjoyed for getting the chance to work on Fallout 3, which they will develop simultaneously with their new Elder Scrolls title, Oblivion. They have promised us a "visually stunning and original game" with "player choice, engaging story, and non-linearity." We have to believe. Just as we have to believe in that 2005 release date. Keeping in mind Bethesda is behind the project, however, we must admit we still have a shadow of doubt in our hearts.
Apart from obtaining the rights to Fallout 3, Bethesda has also acquired the rights to any Fallout titles that may come in the future. This is indeed great news, and I can bear to live with doubt.

Troika Games, one of our favorite developers, was profiled at FileFront today in a feature they call "F! True Company Story". The article is fairly short but does contain some photos of Troika's developers and office, as well as this cliffhanger ending:
But then again, this is a good thing. While managing their growth appears to be a constant problem, it means the company is doing what every software company out there strives to do: succeeding. Their most current release, Vampire: The Masquerade—Bloodlines has largely received great reviews from critics, and it seems there is a positive, hopeful future in store for Troika.
“I hope Troika Games continues to make quality role-playing games, possibly expanding to three teams,” Cain said.
But most ambitious, he also mentioned venturing into a heavily trodden path, changing it for the better. In short, creating a “true-role playing” MMORPG.

Well, after barely any time since the 1.2 patch, Silver Style has released another German patch for The Fall. This patch addresses save game problems, fixes some quests, changes the mini-map, and rebalances experience, among other issues.

The fine folk over at Oblivion Lost have an update on the status of the X-Ray engine, behind the upcoming game S.T.A.L.K.E.R., from one of the developers..
We have a small status update of the engine. As Oles Shishkovtsov, leading programmer of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, told us, the development of the X-Ray Engine would be finished in December of this year. Therefore, a release in may 2005 seems very probable. Currently, the only problem, according to Oles, is, as already known, the debugging of the life simulation system, because no situation is hardly re-produced exactly 1:1 again.Good to hear, let's hope Oles is correct in his estimate.

Moriendor at RPGdot has posted some screenshots as well as some facts about a PA-like strategy game, allegedly with role-play elements - 'Ground Zero'. Here's what's been made known about the plot:
Nobody remembers who started it. But does this really matter? It lasted only a few seconds. A short, intense flash of light and the world would never be the same again.
Humanity bombed itself back to stone age. The cities are burnt down and the earth is covered wit deserts. The few survivors struggle to survive.
The ones with enough will and strength start searching for other survivors.
Law and order has ceased to exist. Food and water are rare and many don’t hesitate to use brutal force to get what they want.
But there might be hope for rescue. Again and again the few working radios are repeating: “Your resort, your chance for a new life. Rebuilding has started. Come to the coordinates 34N, 53W. We are waiting for you!“.

Homelessness has always been an issue in the metropolitan areas of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona -- that wasn't different before the global climate disaster either. Unfortunates who, day for day, tried to survive in the dark corners, alleys or freeway underpasses of the commercial centers like Phoenix AZ, Albuquerque or Houston TX, represented the lowest social level. And even though one could think, that their misery would have been easier to bear in groups, there existed almost no bonds between these outsiders of society.Links:
The catastrophe of 2062 was required to forge them together. Despite the violent change the events of this year brought along, the homeless had to bear the prejudices of others still. Although distrust was an expected daily companion the discrimination reached levels never seen before. Survivors who owned weapons -- and that were many in the South West of the USA -- had no problem seeing the homeless as living targets for shooting practice. So it came that the homeless retreated to the shadows again to stay unmolested.
Time passed by and small, not yet organized, groups of homeless people grew. And with them the self-esteem of their members. New strategies were created to master everyday problems. Like every gang -- and nothing else are the Seekers -- they want loot. However they avoid any unneccessary conflict to get it.
They just wait until an enclave or village lays in ruins after an assault of a gang. Only then they sneak in, kill possible survivors and take the remaining loot for theirselves. This efficient way of raiding causes the Seekers to have only few losses during their raids. On the other hand it is neccessary that they are always well informed about future assaults. Seekers always know what is going on in the wastelands and where to find decent stuff. A proverb says "If you know a seeker, you know the wastelands".

Oblivion-Lost.com has translated a developer diary from the Russian magazine PC Games. It is focused on the artificial intelligence of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. the "Life Simulation System." In addition to the informative sections to the article, there are some entertaining stories.
The artificial intelligence in STALKER allows both people and animals to weight up their chances for survival and act accordingly. You won't often see a stalker with a pistol try to take on a soldier armed with an assault rifle. Of course, rare exceptions are possible, but these will come about because of the unhealthy psycological state of the stalker. We introduced the concept of a "fair intelligence". In general, the NPCs in FPS games know exactly where the player is, because this is known to the God-like all-knowing AI controlling them. In STALKER the enemy AI can only "assume" where the player is. The AI remembers the last spot where it saw the player, and tries to find him using the "what would I do in his place?" method, i.e. the AI searches for the player by assuming what his next possible position could be. It is often fascinating to observe, after secretly climbing up to the loft of a rural farmhouse, how the enemy stalker carefully circles the building with his AK47 at the ready, trying to figure out where the hell you could've gone.Sounds good, though it's nothing they haven't said before. Now all that's left is to see it in action.

One of the IPLY investors over at Raging Bull forums contacted Luke Haas regarding IPLY's Q3 earnings report and Fallout MMORPG plans:
Luke: No specific date has been set for release of the company's third quarterearnings, although we are hard at work on that effort right now. I do notexpect a long delay -- if any -- beyond the standard deadline.Short term issues eh?
As for the recently announced judgment, I will have to defer to the text you saw.
Lastly yes, funding for MMORPG is the future of the company, although there remain short term issues that, if/when they get resolved, will likely improve the chances of the company getting funded for such endeavors.

A Russian site called Crpg.ru recently interviews someone from Akella regarding the leaked demo and thanks to one of our forum member Commisar Lauren we've gotten the interview translated to English:

The main difference lies in the fact that at the time of the creation of the "demo" all aspects of play were in their infancy. We could observe only their prototypes, whereas in the current beta version they all are almost completely developed and finished.
Demo: 16 stats for each hero, with only 4 working.
Beta: System is reworked for 5 basic stats

An interview on Russian site Dirty.ru with a certain PROF from GSC World revealed that a demo for THQ's upcoming FPS S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow Of Chernobyl is planned to be released a month before the shipping of the game (thanks GenGamers). You may have heard before that we'd decided to change the game's engine from our own made ZeD, to a fully developed 3D engine "Tourqe"
By doing this we've saved about half a year of development time. Some of you might be worried that this project will never see the light of day, but I assure you we have carefully thought over this choice.
The problem with Tourqe was buying the 100$ license required for learning the engine. Luckily the problem was solved by a sponsor who bought the license for us. Right now we have the license and are already starting to learn Tourqe.
So now there is no need for your money. We really thank everyone for their good will. We won't forget things like this.

Our choice - 'Torque Engine' - is a complete engine (meaning a tremendous boon to the project schedule), has got a functioning community, tech support and many other virtues, which make it a perfect choice. It offers, among other things:
-the possibility to play Bourgeoisie on Linux and Mac
- ready made Scripting System
- dynamic location loading
- built-in editors - allowing anoyone to build a location (useful with Mods)
- vehicle movement physics (so you'll be able to move around a location in a vehicle)
- minimum requirements for this engine are PII 400MHZ, 256RAM, RIVATNT2 32RAM, (so Bourgeoisie would run even on a sub-par machine)
- a ready made graphics engine, allowing to generate marvellous scenes.
Thanks to Torque we'll get many great possibilities ZeD (old Engine) couldn't provide.
Bourgeoisie will be much better profiled, if we are to take advantage of this engine.
But the most important blessing is that we'll spare much time developing Bourgeoisie owing to "Torque" (at least half a year).
Unfortunately, it's got a severe drawback - it's a commercial engine and to use it, one must pay a license fee of 100$.
THIS IS WHERE WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Well it seems we were somewhat correct in assuming there was something fishy about this release, the demo to Metalheart that we've all tried now is "illegal" or at the very least outdated:
As we have just learned, a “demo” of Metalheart: Replicants Rampage appeared in the World Wide Web not so long ago. It’s our duty to inform you that “Akella” is not responsible for this illegal distribution at all. This is not an official demo-version and it appears to be an incomplete fragment of 2003-year game build flooded with various errors.Damn, good to hear..
This inconvenience has occurred due to frustrating misunderstanding between “Akella” and its partner that has mistakenly put the archive into the Web. The situation is being discussed and taken care of right now.
However, it won’t influence the date of release at all. It will happen in January 2005 as it was previously announced. For this very “demo” is not a complete and tested product, we’d appreciate much if you do not mind its appearance. The final version will be completely different regarding the total conversion of RPG system and many other aspects directly influencing the general game concept itself.

Mad of the Mutants Rising project has informed me that their November update has been posted:
Well we have got a couple of announcements to make this month. First off we seem to have survived our little rough patch last month, and second Trolle is alive and well after injuring himself. He has also managed to finish programming the web based assignment manager, so he now has us all working to a deadline. We will also be resuming the expanded demo build. This should be completed by *DELETED* and will give you the opportunity to give us some feedback (and/or flame us for not sticking to MR cannon )
Lastly the new audio tracks are coming together at a spectacular rate. What's better they even sound good! At some stage we will also be releasing the MP3 versions of a couple of these.

Gamebanshee has posted a huge article on the history of the Fallout game, from Wasteland all the way to Bethesda's work-in-progress. I don't think I need to bait you guys to read this, but since I love Wasteland so much I'm going to post this bit anyway:
Wasteland has garnered numerous critical awards, including 9th place in Computer Gaming World’s 1996 list of the top 150 games of all time. Their mini-review of the game was as follows:
“A fascinating science fiction story set in a post-nuclear world of disintegrating technology, dysfunctional society and mutant organisms, Wasteland was the first game many of us played where the other members of the player's adventuring party acted like "real" people instead of inventory cabinets with names and automatons with skill sets. Ask the party to divvy up the cash and one or more might refuse. Try to get a party member to cough up his/her last clip of ammo? No way! But don't take our word for it. Play it yourself. The entire game is on this month's CD-ROM.”
In 1998, Computer Gaming World inducted Wasteland into its Hall of Fame. In their article, they state that Wasteland is one of the games that "broke the records, established the benchmarks, and held gamers in delighted trances for hours untold. Derived from Mike Stackpole's (PNPRPG) Mercenaries, Spies and Private Eyes, this is the definitive post-apocalyptic RPG.

Ive noticed some people wondering where weve all gone.They've even posted a new Critter FRM to view, so remember to check that out.
Were still here (though posting less due to real life it seems) in the team members section of the fourm (its hidden, so you havent missed anything.)
PreProduction work still continues, and we are still getting ideas together for the maps the demo will use.
Were getting the design document for the demo and taking it apart, deciding whats good, whats bad, and what needs work.
The design doc is rather large, something that would cover multiple locatios in FO or FO2 (or the entire game of FO:Craptics with room to spare. If youre wondering why, its cause the maps are planned to be Huge compared to FO/FO2 maps)
For those wondering about Ender, he's had some family matters come up. Im not aware what happend (and wouldnt disclose it without his premission), though with luck its nothing serious.

In a bizarre world these things happen I guess, evidently IPLY have won an old law suit, here's some info:
On October 19, 2004 the California Superior Court dismissed the legal action of Knight Bridging Korea Co., Ltd ("KBK") filed on September 16, 2002 against the Company and its subsidiary GamesOnline.com, Inc., ("GOL") and granted a judgment to Gamesonline.com, Inc in the cross-complaint from GOL against KBK. The dismissed KBK complaint for $98.8 million was alleging, among other things, breach of contract, misappropriation of trade secrets, breach of fiduciary duties and breach of implied covenant of good faith, in connection with an Electronic Distribution Agreement dated November 2001 between KBK and GOL. The granted judgment against KBK in the cross-complaint is for recovery of $700,000 for KBK's breach of contract. A motion for recovery of Gamesonline.com Inc's legal fees is being filed.Well, one out of the way, 200 to go ?
