Jeff Green of 1up:
As others have reported, Bethesda seems to have done something kinda miraculous in terms of recapturing the original games' look and feel while simultaneously transforming it into a modern, 1st-person world. It reminds me, kind of, of the way Blizzard transformed the 2D, tabletop strategy look of the early WarCraft games into the 3D, you're-soaking-in-it World of WarCraft. Bethesda has taken Interplay's late 90s isometric RPG and swooped the camera down to the ground (though you can still angle it upwards)to put us right in that burned-out post-apocalyptic universe--and, at least as far as the demo goes, it's freakin' revelatory. I had no idea going into it how Bethesda was going to pull off the SPECIAL system, the PiPBoy "PDA" device, and, most importantly, the turn-based combat that was at the heart of the original games, but dang if Bethesda isn't making a smart, thoughtful, and faithful go of it. It actually looks like, if you wanted to, you could play through parts of the game in a more real-time "shooter" way, but clearly players are going to get huge advantages by going into the "V.A.T.S" system (Vault-tec Assisted Targeting System), in which you pause the action, and, as in the original games, target specific enemy body parts, the success of which operates on percentages, and the damage of which can be extraordinary.

Most important, right now, is what others have said about this work-in-progress: that Bethesda has captured the essence of what made the originals so unique: the odd juxtaposition of apocalpytic future nightmare with retro-50s kitsch, folksy humor mixed with mutant monsters, --a creative challenge that in the wrong hands could be utterly cheeseball, but that Bethesda is so far recreating beautifully.

It's funny how "shocked" and "surprised" these people appear to be at how magically Bethesda is bringing Fallout into full next-gen mode.

I think a lot of these people were just waiting to be spoonfed absolutely anything that just had the words Fallout and RPG on it by Bethesda.

He has no idea how Bethesda were going to pull off the SPECIAL system? PIPboy? The things are there already to be used. People are acting as it's some kind of great feat to take these things from older games, and implement them into your own.
OMG, SPECIAL is back!!!!!! Yes...? That's about the least fuckin' thing you could ask for a game that is supposedly a sequel, Jesus Christ.

It's kinda funny... Glittering Gems of Hatred was the nickname for the Fallout fanbase before any Fallout 3 info was released. What will we be called after one more year of these previews?

EDIT: And this is coming from someone who was slightly hopeful about the game before any info was released.

As others have craped...

Sorry, the comparison stinks.

What was there to pull off? To use the system that's already working?

Overruled.

Brahmin crap, again.

All the essence they've captured is the vinegar one.

The flamer, Ripley!

This one isn't that bad. Pretty non-biased and most of the stuff he seems to approve of appears to me to have a fair chance of being fallouty based on what I've read so far (and I think I might have read all of them).

Props to Bethsoft for accomplishing something that is TRULY surprising:

Somehow completely destroying a world that was already completely destroyed through nuclear annihilation.

That's pretty impressive.

And that's why WoW is also called Warcraft 4... oh wait, no it isn't! Because it's a completely different genre and has nothing to do with the series gameplay wise!

That's exactly what I was thinking when I read this.
As it has been mentioned it should be Fallout: (insert sub name here)

exactly, WoW in no way resembles any aspect of the original's gameplay, the only thing that links WoW to the older games is the settings and story.

so i guess we're looking forward to World of Fallout? forgo a sequel and just make a whole new bastard child

You're not gonna like our new podcast (if you care to listen, which I doubt.) We directly talk about the reaction to the new game by (certain unnamed) Fallout fansites. What's "funny" is that we recorded it before I even saw this thread. Had I seen it, I probably would have quoted it directly, especially the line about me with "Beth$ cum". That is podcast gold.

I'm sure you would've quoted "Beth'$ cum" to use in a nice silver bullet fallacy.
I doubt however you would've quoted anything of substance, or how multiple people recognised that you went and compared a sequel to a spinoff.

Meh. We're getting used to people taking potshots at us through podcasts. I'm sure it somehow makes you feel a lot better to use official means of transference to mock a community of people. Your call, not something I'd do, since we like keeping our frontpage and article clean off any personal attacks, but hey, you're the professionals.

I'm curious, tho', we've been around for 10 years, why the smear campaign against the Fallout community now? I admit we make it quite easy because we have a lot of nutjobs on our forum, but I note a difference between gaming journalists who come here and talk to us and gaming journalists who either already hate us (Alan Rausch) or quickly pick up on the bandwagon of flaming us (you, apparently?)

I wasn't comparing anything to anything. I was simply making an analogy in terms of ART DIRECTION from one franchise to another. It was a form of shorthand--albeit an admittedly slightly awkward one. But, see, that's the beautiful thing about some (not all!) of you guys. Every single sentence anyone writes is just used as further proof to you that 1) the new game is gonna suck 2) Bethesda sucks and 3) anyone in the gaming press who writes anything about it (especially if expressed in a positive light) is an idiot.

Which is fine with me. I saw the game running for 1 hour, in person, and l Iiked what I saw. I don't need my opinion validated by others. I'm happy that someone is trying to make a third game, and I am not going to froth at the mouth about every perceived difference to the original games, especially given that there's so much we haven't even seen yet. (And, yeah, I played both original games, multiple times, when they first came out.)

But if it sucks when it comes out, it will get a shitty review, which , as those who read our mag know, we're not afraid to do.

Anyway, I know my presence here is just like hitting a beehive with a bat, but I couldn't help myself. I actually like this site a lot, and have lurked for forever. (I stayed quiet when you were all bashing us for our impressions of the trailer.) But now you may flame away, of course.

Cheers,
Jeff

I know how we come off like that, because we do find talking about things we don't like more than things we do like. That doesn't mean there's nothing we don't like. The reaction to the teaser was positive. When we found out dialogue would be Fallout-like, everyone was more-or-less glad.

It's just that unlike other sites, we don't revel in going "oh, man, that looks great" with a lot of "+1" posts following it. It's just not our style.

And, at the end of the day, this game looks like it might be a good RPG, and with more RPG elements than Oblivion's action-style, but it might still simply "not be for us." I don't like how a lot of people seem to take umbrage at the fact that we have tastes that are extremely different from the people at large. I respect their right to love Oblivion and am glad the gaming industry is making their kind of games, I'm unclear on why we deserve to have them call the kind of games we like "totally outdated" and then laugh at us in derision because nobody is making those kind of games anymore.

As for the media, I disagree. It's just that we've seen 50 previews that pretty much all provide the same information and almost all read like pre-made Bethesda press packages. I'm sure you all loved it, but that kind of bland, repitious hamering is boring, and could only happen in gaming journalism. When we get something better, we're glad
