A while ago a number of NMA forum users decided to give a go to building a True Sequel to the Fallout games on the FIFE engine, out of disappointment with Bethesda (as mentioned at InsideGamer). They've been making steady progress. Bunkermensch informs us:
We are currently building a techdemo and some dev tools, which will be done in near future.
With finishing that milestone, the actual work on the game could begin.

Part of this milestone is a first techdemo which includes a Vault Dweller running through a wood.

So we can use some people who have knowledge about Fallout , who are 2D/3D artists or can write stories or just want to contribute ideas. Java specialists are welcome too.

We could need a new Vault Dweller, be creative and contribute concept art and develop it to animation-sprites. You would directly contribute to the techdemo and thus to the later game. Furthermore we could use environmental sprites, like trees, walls and similar.

We also need a storyline done by Fallout geeks. Work out ideas for a Fallout Sequel, that can be fun really!

They're not using FIFE for their demo version Smile

I've just offered them hosting as I think it's better to try to get your hands dirty instead of ranting all the time.

The techdemo is selfmade using JAVA and JOGL, thus what you see on the Screenshot is not FIFE.

Barra gave us great support, especially in the beginning, thanks again for that!

We really need people with art skills to fill the technology frame, we really do not want to stuck on original Fallout sprites Very Happy So if there is anybody here who is interested... pm me and i will introduce you.

Doesn't FIFE basically function so that a techdemo you'd build on the Fallout engine could be easily ported to FIFE?

Yeah - good news. Good luck to you - IMO it's a good choice to work on a own engine until FIFE is ready. The gained knowledge will come in handy Smile

Nope :-p

Fallout support is not around biggest priority anymore as the focus has shifted to become a rather full-featured 2d RPG engine instead of an improved Fallout engine.

I'm busy with exams ATM but we'll celebrate our project birthday (2 years of FIFE) in a month. Besides that the work on the new version is coming along well, we're planning to have an FIFE-related interview with some RPG site (I can't say which one but if it actually works out, you'll prolly read about it here at NMA) and we'll announce something rather big soon.

Ahh well, you'll need to wait some time but some nice updates are coming Smile

So is this game running in its own engine at the moment, and does it have plans to be converted to FIFE in the future?

I hope your big announcement is that FIFE is now featured enough to be playable.

When it comes to making games, I can't do s**t. I'm only good at playing them. But I have to say- good luck guys. I hope we'll be able to play proper FO sequel made by people who know what is Fallout.

I wish them luck and hope they get rolling. If they get a good team together, and have a fletched out story ready, they should try pitching the idea to some investors.

They'd have a small studio, work towards a solid product and and eventually attract a small but (I believe) very appreciative fan base.

Sometimes it can be more difficult to go half the way than all the distance.

It's good to see that something good has come out of this. It's cool that I can say 'I was there in the beginning', but if I tried to come back now, I'd probably hold you guys back (even though now I do have an idea for a location for the game now, and a bit of early storyline (if it's in the same universe as Fallout, we never got that down).

Hold you guys back? Ohh common, is today silly excuse day?

There are basically two rather simple options:
a) You want to help and contribute
b) You don't want to help

It's really as simple as that. So if you want to help feel free to visit their irc channel and contribute to their wiki. And if you don't want to help, don't come up with these kind of reasons for not contributing.

I'd love to help and contribute if I can find time between my full school load and job and social life.

I'm fairly artistically inclined, although I've never tried making sprites before, and am not really even sure what kind of program and format they'd need to be in. Seems like I'd need to build them in 3dstudiomax or lightwave or something, and then just render them small??

Well anyways, if anyone knows about it, give me a quick rundown and I will seriously see what I can do.

We just started to set the main direction of the storyline and are discussing it on our wiki. When you are interested, visit the wiki, have a look and participate in evolving it if you like to.

Hey Barra, happy birthday! Mr. Green

Yes actually we just need some character model (vault dweller, char of our possibly stroyline in example), which later can be converted to sprites. So when you would model and/or animate one, I am sure it will be used in the techdemo.

It was only a matter of time until we banded together and decided; "Know what, fuck Bethesda - we've loved this game more than anyone else, we should know what's best, and we're going to create the sequel."

If the project takes off the ground, we'll have a gigantic victory on our hands; imagine how much it would hurt to read that Fallout 3 made by the fans is outranking the one made by Bethesda? Mr. Green
