Looking for a worldmap to use on your mod?

I spent a lot of time on the net looking for suitable relief maps to use in fallout 2 and managed to find a few.

    Some include:

    - Australia
    - Nth America
    - Sth America
    - Europe

I used a slice of the Nth America map to rebuild a 2800 x 3000 (8 x 10 tiles) section of the worldmap which covers all the state of California, Nevada and part of Arizona; here is a low-res preview of what I got so far.

If you want to see a full-sized low-res version try the link below.

    http://www.freewebs.com/herrleiche/Mods/newmap8x10.jpg

If anyone needs a map for any of the above areas just send me a PM and I will upload it to my site.

PS. Would anyone be interested in a Fallout Oz mod?

Glad you guys like it, it does still need a long way to go before I'm happy with it.

And back to the North America map, I am having problems uploading the file so I'll just direct you to the source.

You can download the maps from the links below

    North America (enlarge to 490%)
    ftp://ftp.ngdc.noaa.gov/GLOBE_DEM/pi...CAcolshade.JPG

If you want a more detailed map of the whole US showing major cities try this one (enlarge to 246.5%).
    ftp://ftp.ngdc.noaa.gov/GLOBE_DEM/pi...itcolshade.jpg

I quickly put together some instructions on how to scale and apply colour schemes, if they don't make sense is because I have been up for nearly 48 hours and I am about ready to drop.

    Here they are.

    QUICK AND DIRTY INSTRUCTIONS

    BASIC SHADING
Back up the map and open the copy in a program like photoshop.

The jpegs are between 6 and 9Mb; if your machine can handle it and you are using photoshop, select color ranges, replace the colours and play around with the brightness, contrast and colour balance to get basic colour schemes.

If you don't have a fast processor and lots of ram, I recommend you only work on small selections of the map but make sure you save your colour ranges so you can apply them later to other sections, this way you won't get uneven shades if you are building the map in sections.

Select a section of the map containing the area of interest, copy then create a new file and paste your selection.

    SCALING

You need to increase the map size by 490% for the Nth America or 246.5% for the US map, to get it to the same scale used in fallout; this will result in a very large file (difficult to handle for old machines) so that's why I recommend you get your basic colour scheme before you slice off sections to work on, otherwise if you want to increase you area later, the colour schemes remain even and you don't get lighter or darker patches like I did.

Before doing this, I recommend you select all the ocean section and turn it transparent; again if you are using photoshop paste your selection into a new file as a new layer, use the magic wand tool or select colour range from the Select menu, and clear the black pixels with the delete key (or rubber tool) when all that section has been selected. You might have to do this repeatedly until all the black pixels have been cleared; this will later allow you to create the ocean as different layers below the land. (and if you want to include lakes, once you have drawn them delete the section of the land containing the lake to reveal the water layer below).

Once you have scaled the map, you want to measure multiples of a 350x300 pixel square (1 tile) and crop any remaining pixels; the worldmap is 4 x 5 tiles (1400x1500 pixels) square, if you want to increase that you need to change data/data/worldmap.txt; if you need details on how to edit this file you can find it in the modding forums at NMA or contact me by PM.

With the land section ready, add a few more layers and use textures to create a water effect; these layers have to be below the land section layer, start creating one by filling the whole area of that layer with your desired colour scheme.

    COASTLINES
Coastlines can be designed by creating multiple layers of water between the land and deep ocean layers; use the rubber tool to delete the top layers exposing the layers below, creating a gradient effect around the coastline.
EDITED 2-5-2004: I'm still quite new to photoshop so I stumbled into an easier way to create the coast highlight:
    - Make sure all the ocean and water areas on the land layer are transparent.
    - Copy this layer and paste once or more times between the ocean and land layer, these will serve as mask layers.
    - Select the first mask layer (next from the ocean layer), from the Layer tab click on 'Add a Layer Style' and select 'Outer Glow'; this brings up the settings window where you can specify the colour gradient used, range of the glow, etc.
For the first mask layer you want a long range darker glow, for the second and all subsequent masks you want to decrease the range of the glow and increase the brightness until you get to the land layer where you will use the minimum range and brightest shade. This will give the effect shown on the maps in the following posts.

    FINAL TOUCHES
With the map section ready, select colour ranges again and play around with the tools until you get the desired finish on the map and create a grid layer.

Once you have this ready you want to slice 350x300 sections of this map (be careful they match) copy* and paste this sections into 256 8-bit indexed colour bitmaps using the fallout palette, and create your FRMs tiles.

    * Make sure you copy the merged layers.
And finally, I found an excellent freeware map making program called 3dem; this program renders 3d terrain from Digital Elevation Models (DEMs). You can check it out on the link below.

    Have fun!

think you could find time to do us one?
you would of course get an "honorable mention" in the end credits of the mod...

basically i can do the lines and the cutting up into pieces, i just suck at the colouring...

That's cool, send us a PM and we could make further arrangements. Basically I need to know the map size and area you want covered.

So much to learn... so little time. Trying to make a possible version of what HighPool would have looked like. And trying to make the Red Ryder himself.

I uploaded another low-res sample map covering a larger area of the west coast including part of Mexico.

No grids have been placed yet, cities are shown in green as reference.

    Here it is.

    EDIT 17-June-2004

Sorry folks, I had to remove this image to vacate some space in my optusnet site.

Heh. Maybe once I'm done with my current mod project.

By the way, I hope you're still interested in doing World Maps for projects, I've sent you a Private Message regarding one.
Until I hear "Isometric view", "SPECIAL system", "non-linearity", "turn-based combat" and "paths for diplomat, thief and combat characters" then I'm dubious about Fallout 3 by Bethesda.

Ok, I finished the basic US mainland map; all it needs is the hydrological and grid layer to be complete.

Here is a scaled down low-res version with the city layer visible.

I will upload a high-res full scale to my freewebs site a bit later.

    EDIT
I just remembered the full scale high-res images are about 28Mb in jpg format so I just uploaded a low-res version which is about 2Mb; to view it, copy the link and paste it in the address bar of a new browser window.

Why is the right side of the map so dark and black in areas? The left side has a lot of rich browns but about mid-way it's quite a change. The bottom right is all splotchy too. Is that because it's such a flat area?

I recoloured the map from a shaded digital elevation model, basically I just retuned the shades to match as closely as possible to what they would look like from a satellite image; the image also degraded a lot when I converted it to low-res for the web, the high-res image looks much better.

    Corpse,

Could you possibly do a map with city-overlay that stretches from California coast to the Missouri river?

On the north end of the map, cut off right where Omaha would be?

I'd like to be able to use the Rockies, and we may use the ruins of Omaha since StratCom is there.

If you can color the map, great. If not, I can follow your instructions. You're the best!

I'll see what I can do about it, it might take me a while though because I am working on a few projects at the moment.
