I've just installed Fallout 2 on my XP box and keep getting 'running Fallot 2 requires the CD' even though the disk is in the drive. I've checked the CD and it's clean with no scratches so I'm baffled. The version I'm using is the White Label UK edition and it has been patched.

Check the path(s) in the config file so it matches your drive letter.

Did you try a Humongous install yet? Also, maybe it's a good idea to get a fan-made patch.

    Un-orthodox steps (Don't flame me)

#1: Copy master.dat and critter.dat into the Fallout 2 folder and change .ini to point to Fallout 2 folder.

#2: Backup entire CD using legal software, and legally play the game.

PS, I believe that non-US versions of the Fallout games have that form of evil copy-protection. I remember reading about that before.

There's lots more copy protection on stuff in Europe, for some reason. Someone had me trying to copy a Greek CD, and it has some kind of weird app. that overrides your media player and tries to play the CD itself. The CD can't be copied on a PC... but the solution, of course, is simple: a 20 year old Citizen portable CD player the size of a brick and a patch cable. Play the CD, record files, and subsequently burn them to a CD that you can do whatever you want with. Strange that this copy protection foils only the most casual copier, on whom the record company looses a pittance if anything (For if he can't get the album for free, then he probably won't get it at all), not the determined pirate who will take the company for as much as he can selling bootlegs.

I believe not, since I've been running what I think is an UK version (no kids!) and it never failed to run w/o the CD on a humongous install, or when the paths were set incorrectly.

However, it may be that *some* non-US versions are copy protected, but there's no detectable copy protection on any of my copies.

Did you use the US patch, or a fan patch that includes the US exe file by any chance?

All the UK versions (on humungous with or without the UK patch) I've played ask for the cd.

I'm using the 1.05 patch, but I remembered that I've been able to run the game without it and without the CD.

I've checked and the executable from the version vended by CD Projekt, and it doesn't run without the CD (or with it). However, the executable from the version vended by Bundled Software, the game runs fine.

I've just checked, and it seems that the version from Bundled Software DOES have children, so it must be a US version (which means I own both, yippie!) so you're probably right and I was wrong.

I had exactly the same problem and after some trial, error and many installations I found out that the GSP white label DVD has the US Fallout 2 version, even though GSP is a UK based brand.

    1) Install the humongous version
    2) Go here and download the file they provide
3 *Optional* ) Use the US versions of the 1.05 and 1.05U1 fan made patches

    Cheers :D

Hi, guys n gals. Been away for a while and just today started back on FO1 on my XP box. The problem turns out to be NOT copy protection on CDs but a slight error in the text file offered for manually installed .cfg file. what read.

    eg - master_dat=c:\games\fallout\master.dat should have read master_dat=c:\games\fallout1\master.dat

Apologies for being dull there (teach me to always sanity check other peoples files :D )

Thanks for the efforts you all made and now I'm back I'll try to post more often

    Peace

Mine is " master_dat=F:\Tiger\Games\Fallout2\master.dat" so it seems alright. Yet i have the same problem, after installing the patch. I have the CD inside yet the damn game still asks for it ffs.
