Here Brian Fargo Himself explains it.

I certainly feel a deep dichotomy about this. I think I'm scared.

I backed Wasteland 3 with a hefty sum. As long as that game releases unhindered then that's all I care.

A little part of me, a part that I'm suffocating as we speak, hopes that the inExile and Obsidian elements can be brought together, and even Avellone maybe - through Microsoft, to make something beautiful again. Rebuilding the Black Isles.

And honestly, I hate how every time in these sorts of videos they talk about graphics. You're making an RPG, graphics are so low on a list of your priorities you could bring back blobby sprites and repetitive animations and, so long as you can make a reactive, consistent, and interesting rpg, it would take away nothing from the end product.

Obsidian was apparently known for a while to be negotiating, but inXile was quite a surprise for me. Now in one stroke Microsoft has both indie RPG companies. Maybe they will cooperate in future endeavours? However it has been made clear both now subsidiaries are their own separate thing.

Isn't Avellone a free agent at the moment?

    Yup.
Left Obsidian in 2015, started working with Larian Studios as a Freelance.

He also did some stuff for Subset Games, who made FTL.

Hasn't been permanently employed by either so presumably is still Free.

After a quick google search, apparently he's doing some stuff for the System Shock remake. That males me a little more optimistic about it.

I wonder if their games will be exclusive to microsoft store and xbox from now on. Played and finished both Pillars Of Eternity games, Tyranny, Wasteland 2 on native linux versions. Native linux versions/ports are of course out of the question now, but if they also will be tied to microsoft and not on steam or gog, that's a no go for me. That of course might not matter, if microsoft starts to mess with their game development freedom.

At least they get to keep their jobs.

This sucks. Both studios. I wonder if Microsoft will own their IPs going forward. I'm sure the companies are happy about the funding, but I don't see this being a good thing at all in the long run. Hope they won't be console exclusive. I'm done with Xbox and it's not exactly a great platform for isometric RPGs.

They won't be console exclusives, but I bet they will be Microsoft Store only.

It's like Microsoft had a specific interest in doing this to the two most sucessfull indie oldschool RPG companies. Why couldn't just leave the genere alone if they were not interested in it. I'm going to go full conspiracy theorist at this rate, about something in the lines of they hate our favorite kind of game and have a personal interest in making them disappear.

Nah, it boils down to modern "games as a service" approach. In order to get the folks pay monthly fee for access to publisher's games there has to be huge variety of genres available here to satisfy everyone.

Arkane Studios comes to mind with Dishonored or Prey released after being acquired by Zenimax.
