How about being a game keeper in one of the big national parks in Africa? A lot of poacher hunting, always carry a gun, interact with wild and dangerous animals, sleep outside and never be sure if "they" are going to build a dam, a motorway, a Sun City or anything similar to ruin your workplace.

I am currently re-reading "The Master and Margarita" by Mikhail Bulgakov. A wonderful book. Also if you like "strange" books I really recommend "Winter's tale" by Mark Helprin. It is kind of beautiful.
