In my case manually installing the game helped. There's no sound.exe in the directory that way, but the sound miraculously works fine. :D

Up! I have the same problem on my laptop. I'm running Win XP with SP3. I'm using a Realtek HD Audio soundcard along with the latest drivers dedicated for my system ( 5.10.0.5470 ). I've got the August '08 release of dx 9.0c. I've also tried turning HW acceleration off and on, but no avail...
