Yep, got exactly the same problem on Win7 x86. Screen stays black with the music playing. I tried all aforementioned suggestions - no luck.

Update: installing previous version of the patch did somewhat help running the game, but now all I see is a black screen with music in the background. And as for the application error, it was something about "memory at x00000000" or something. I'll kep you posted.

Nah, I was alone and I didn't fight them back. I am aware of the engine limitations and of the fact that a victorious side (if they're hostile) will attack you only after you end the combat, but this is not the case. The victorious party tried to wipe me out next turn and they were damn mobs...
