You can just subscribe to NMA news RSS feed. I am sure they will announce the release of RP 1.3, just as they announced the release of new megamod version.

Does the installer and/or the game work in 32bit win7? What are the error messages you get when running the installer? Why not use 32bit version as speed improvement isn't really noticable, it uses less memory and usually there are more/better drivers for 32bit version?

You can drop the item from inventory screen. Also does it crash for you if you just put the item to active slot? I guess, for some reason, it searches character animation files which show the character equipped with the item and fails.

Definitely sth wrong on your end. Sempron 3400+ CPU and 1GB of RAM here and it takes 1-2 minutes to install.
