not sure about the the case things but absolutely fat laptops are great, you can usually change things like memory and storage media on the bigger laptops. My Toshiba isn't THE thickest but its a damn sight thicker than laptops nowadays and i can swap hdds to my hearts content.

Id say so but only because i was in the same boat for a fair few years until i upgraded to using peppermint OS, i cant do anything too fancy or technical with it but i find you can get quite a bit more mileage out of old computers, especially from the 2007 - 2012 time period in my experience...
