This guy has the right idea! In a hypothetical game with said feature I would have it go like this: If it is an FPS, like Stalker for example, every time an enemy AI is actively trying to kill you, it is considered "Combat mode". During combat mode you are left with the number of magazines...

Well the idea in my head is, I was playing Stalker and was imagining how unique it would look watching my character or other characters in the game pick up magazines and fill them. Maybe when they are all sitting around the campfire, they can be filling up magazines and cleaning their rifles...
