Which Pen and Paper RPG systems are interesting?

A couple of settings come to mind. I'll post in a couple of days when I actually have access to the materials.

In which science fiction or fantasy universes would you like to live?

I've never known an author as consistently excellent as Pratchett. I think there are over 40 novels in discworld, and the first 6 or 7 books get better and better until he hits his stride and just keeps putting out excellent books, until his last couple when he was severely handicapped by...

Which Pen and Paper RPG systems are interesting?

This is bordering on necro, but there are some really interesting games that haven't been touched on at all. So I thought I'd throw in a few. Eclipse Phase, transhuman and fairly hard sci-fi, probably my favorite game setting of all time. This recommendation is more about setting than rules...

In which science fiction or fantasy universes would you like to live?

The Culture universe (Iain Banks). Off the top of my head I can't think of a place that competes in terms of both personal opportunites and overall pleasantness, though the Star Trek universe is relatively close. The Culture universe even provides an outlet for sociopaths and misanthropes in...

Fallout 4 is not "Skyrim with guns."

I avoid quest mods for exactly this reason. The few highly rated ones I've tried have mostly been really, really bad. But I also think it's fair to judge a professional studio more harshly than a single person or small group of amateurs.

Fallout 4 is not "Skyrim with guns."

I was coming from the context of a general statement games and modding. Yeah, saying mods will fix it is a bad sign, and an excuse. Though, honestly, there are areas where I think it's legit reasoning. I suppose it depends on what's important for a particular player. For example, I'm fine...

Fallout 4 is not "Skyrim with guns."

Yeah, a game should be playable and ideally even good without mods. But I feel like you're arguing for a platonic ideal about what makes a game good. What makes a game good to me is what I experience when I play it. Look at KOTOR 2 and the restoration mod, or Vampire: Bloodlines and the...

Fallout 4 is not "Skyrim with guns."

I love Morrowind but I actually had a really good time--and put in a ridiculous amount of hours--with Skyrim. I was pissed at first because it wasn't the game I hoped for but then I accepted that I could enjoy it for what it was. I personally wouldn't mind a Skyrim 2, though I'd rather...

Fallout 4 is not "Skyrim with guns."

Not as bad as I expected it to be. The video is a response to another video which gives him some leeway. IMO the big issues of dumbing down are related to the removal of challenge, quest branches, failure and consequences. His first point is the only one that even comes close to covering the...

Ulysses is kind of a moron...

I just finished Lonesome Road for the first time and I absolutely agree with the OP. Throughout the journey, Ulysses and the scrawled messages kept inviting you to go home, which is exactly what I wanted to do. I had no incentive to continue except for the fact that I'd had the DLC sitting...

My Own Theory About Why F4 Is The Way It Is

The whole "Bethesda needs a new engine" trope is based on certain players hopes and beliefs (mostly centered around console graphics and bugs) rather than anything BGS has ever said. The engine is buggy, but suits their needs. Creating a new engine from scratch isn't automatically better, it...
