    Impressions thread for negative impressions

Not wanting to deviate from the formula that made Oblivion successful. Being a company where most of your employees are from a business background, and perhaps only 1% are interested in genuinely advancing the genre.

Playing a neutral or evil characters?

In fairness to Beth, it's like that in BG and pretty much any crpg. You either work for the good guys or you work for the bad guys. If you don't work for either you can't gain experience. To be "neutral" you have to work both sides 50/50. It's a crappy system, but it's the same system...

Playing a neutral or evil characters?

I believe neutrality is a mind-set, rather than how you act. One possible meaning of neutral (you could even argue evil), is someone who is primarily selfish. He does whatever keeps the majority happy, which normally involves abiding by the law. He may do some good things begrudgingly, only...

Playing a neutral or evil characters?

Thing is, crpgs only look at actions. They have no understanding of motives. If you help someone, the game assumes you are good-natured. If you steal something, the game universally decides you are being evil. Most crpgs have this same fault. There is no neutral path, and in order to maintain...

Trying to play F3 in a fluffy (canon) way

Since every super mutant and ghoul originated from a non-mutated human, they are both very definitely mutated creatures, ie mutants. However mutant or mutie tends to be a colloquial term for differentiation. After all, most wastelanders have varying degrees of mutation, and are thus mutants...

    Impressions thread for positive impressions

FO3 suffered from invisible walls and other immersion-breaking effects. Did it bother anyone else that you couldn't climb over a pile of rubble? That the whole of inner DC was only accessible by metro, because the buildings had conspired to collapse in such a way that they formed a...

    Impressions thread for positive impressions

Something I've come to appreciate is that there are two kinds of casual gamers (horrid generalisations follow). 1. The casual gamer who plays 30 mins a day, and doesn't mind having a single game last all year. 2. The casual gamer who plays 30 mins a day, and wants to complete every game in...

Trying to play F3 in a fluffy (canon) way

And allows them to grow small trees in their head. Don't ask how that works. Not everything in FO made sense.

Your character does NOT "resemble [his/her] father&quot

To me it's an example of wasted and/or misdirected effort. But hurrah for a "Dad" model that changes appearance in a minor way, and has totally zero impact or usefulness in the game, and is hardly even noticeable. I'm glad they took the time to code it in. Really.

Fallout 3, Bioshock: Videogames or not?

IIRC, you don't get to choose. The final boss picks three of your squad at random, and you can only change if you let one of them die... It didn't matter, because I'd levelled all the GFs, and developed everyone to have a full set of skills. That was another mistake I made the first time...

Boy and his Dog is an interesting watch. I liked the ending ;)

Fallout 3, Bioshock: Videogames or not?

That brings back memories :) First time I played I didn't understand the game fully. Got to the final boss and couldn't beat it. Second time I fully mastered junctions, went and grabbed the optional GFs, and got Lionheart. Probably got the other weaps too; don't remember. Final boss was...

    Arkansas... wtf is Arkansas?

This is where turn-based games shine and FO3 fails. In a TB game, getting up close to an enemy is dangerous. If you leave an enemy alive at point blank range and have to end your turn, the enemy gets a few good shots or hits in and you're dirt-napping. In FO3, a low guns skill is entirely...

Trying to play F3 in a fluffy (canon) way

You're not meant to think. If you do, you're playing it wrong. You're supposed to go "oooh" and "ahhh" every time you decapitate someone with a critical headshot. Seriously. If you want proof, look at the youtube videos and read some of the comments.

Fallout 3: A Reflection on the Writing

Hmm but that wasn't what I was saying. An Role Playing Game doesn't offer one single role. Because, as you said, all games offer at least one role. A role playing game offers multiple roles that can be played, but asks the player to chose, via character creation and future choices, which...

Fallout 3: A Reflection on the Writing

Essentially, what you're saying is: A valid example of an RPG doesn't have to present the player with any character choices. You can give the player all possible skills, starting at minimum value. You can let the player level up all skills to maximum value. There are no choices to be made...

    Re targeting Turrets

Turrets are so weak they got shot up by a single raider in 0.5 seconds anyhow. Don't waste your time?

Fallout 3: A Reflection on the Writing

That's silly. RPGs are not spreadsheets. They are not defined by presenting the user with numbers. But if that's your opinion, I don't see that I can change it either.

Fallout 3: A Reflection on the Writing

GTA:SA and Dead Rising don't hide the numbers. They present the numbers graphically. Also many RPG hide the formula the numbers are used in.

Fallout 3: A Reflection on the Writing

What you've described is an "advancement game" or "levelling up game". How can it be an RPG if you are capable of performing every action at maximum proficiency? The "role" in RPG has to mean something. I guess you could claim you're roleplaying a god, or a super=hero, or something. But...
