    Gripes about the writing

I notice a lot of hate for GoW (1). What's wrong with it? It isn't trying to be an RPG. It doesn't pretend to be telling a story. It's a 3rd person shooter, and does 3rd person shooting OK. It doesn't have easy-mode VATS combat. Some parts need more than one attempt on normal and several...

The brother hood of Steel in FO3

Re: Brotherhood at your service Kids must lap that stuff up. "Look mom I'm the heee-ro!" I felt utterly un-heroic, as I gunned down mentally deficient raiders and "super" mutants. I couldn't imagine that anyone would have been particularly impressed with my exploits in the main quest...

Funny and Stark Example of Beth's Laziness...

There is certainly an art to getting them right. It's people who think games can be designed by numbers that are flooding the market with formulaic tripe.

Fallout 3, Bioshock: Videogames or not?

It's probably a desire to avoid situations where you have just faced one battle, successfully, but are too low on health to face the next battle. Assuming you haven't saved for a while, you'll have to replay a lot of the game. The auto-healing means that you can face every challenge and just...

Funny and Stark Example of Beth's Laziness...

If there's any truth to be told, it's just that FO3 is selling well. Based on that you can draw your own conclusions. The two most popular are that: . FO3 is a great game. . FO3 is pretty rubbish, and most people wouldn't know a great game if it hit them in the face with wet molerat...

Funny and Stark Example of Beth's Laziness...

As per topic, another example of laziness follows. Out-of-dialogue NPC speech often totally contradicts in-dialogue speech. Example: Princess in Little Lamplight. In dialogue, she says "you stupid, filthy in-bred mungo, I hate everything about you." So I close dialogue. 10 seconds...

Some odd "holes" in Fallout 3

The Vaults were some of the most disappointing areas. Like the clone vault. The sum total of the information given (though logs) was "hey guys, we have a cloning facility. the clones are hostile to non-clones. some of our guys were attacked". Beth says "OK, background done. Now let's...

Fallout 3: A swell cover band.

The funny thing is, if you go to any gaming forums except NMA, and voice your disappointment in FO3, you'll get told that "you have no idea what makes a good game." Believe me, I've got the T-shirt.

This cat has been cloned to GLOW IN THE DARK

Ja. Off the top of my head, I know they've already done that to tobacco plants rabbits And probably more besides. Making animals glow is no longer exciting. They need to start engineering cat-people. I want my very own Bagi chick.

    Oasis

As an aside, didn't I read somewhere that FO4 and future titles would be sub-contracted out to other dev studios? Or did I dream that?

So, anyone struggle through as a non-combat character?

What version of FO did you play? Where muties had to get "lucky crits" to kill you? Crits happened all the damn time. Mini-guns did a large amount of damage because they fired a lot of bullets. Without armour you took the full damage from each bullet (and died). With armour, IIRC, the...

Fallout 3, Bioshock: Videogames or not?

Heh. If you really care about my age, you could probably have a reasonable guess based on the 3rd paragraph in my first post. Also my first console was an Atari 2600; my first home computer a Commodore C64. First games I remember playing are Tooth Invaders, Spy Hunter and Lunar Lander...

Fallout 3, Bioshock: Videogames or not?

Over-reliance on copy-paste areas like subway stations. I know that subways stations aren't the most interesting places, and I fully accept that Beth could hardly place a gothic castle in the middle of DC (Quake gothic castles > FO3 subway stations, for sure). So perhaps one or two subway...

So, anyone struggle through as a non-combat character?

I'm calling BS on that. There is no way in hell you could have survived the military base without armour. The muties in there have gattling lasers and rocket launchers and flamers. Simply put... no way, jose.

So, anyone struggle through as a non-combat character?

Yeah, my initial reaction to muties at low level was "run like hell". That was because of my experience with muties in FO1/2. But when I actually fought one, I realised I'd been wasting my time running from them. They don't take any more killing than your average raider :/ Interestingly...

Fallout 3, Bioshock: Videogames or not?

Interesting. You could say any shooter is basically doing the same thing, but there are shooters which spice things up, and shooters which remain pretty limited and bland throughout. I'd personally say that even Quake had more variety than F3 does. And more interesting gameplay. Multiple...

So, anyone struggle through as a non-combat character?

It's not the way I played either, but when I learned you could do this, I had to admire the devs for supporting wildly different play-styles. And with that in mind, I rolled a "talky" character in F3, only to find out that Beth doesn't continue the trend.

Fallout 3, Bioshock: Videogames or not?

It's not that I want all my games to be super-challenging. I really, really like Sonic 2 as an example of a fantastic game, and yet it's really not all that difficult. The thing I think that bugs me about F3 is probably the same thing that bugged me with Crysis. All the enemies are...

Is there a worse character than Moira?

I hated Little Lamplight so much. It could have worked with some modification. But without any protection, there is no way in hell any kid would behave like that. I turned up in power armour and some 12 year starts threatening to shoot me? Ahahaha. They could, for instance, have put the...

    A genuine, worthy sequel

I hope you aren't implying that everyone who dislikes FO3 is either a "blind hater" or "arrogant". Because there's plenty of us who can, and will, explain exactly why we think FO3 is one of the most overrated games around. Anyway, you can take comfort in the fact that FO3 is bound to win...
