Fallout 3, Bioshock: Videogames or not?

As you say, it would take more than difficulty settings to make FO3 a decent game. The whole design philosophy would have to change, from a game designed for casuals to a game designed for gamers. You can't flip and switch to make that happen. Arguments which rely on "if you don't like it...

    [Poll] KB&M or Controller?

I used a 360 controller, and ammo was never a problem. There is so much ammo for the low-tech weapons that you can pretty much run around gunning off. Like has been said, FO3 isn't about precision aiming. Also the 360 pad is so much more comfortable than any kb/mouse combo for me.

Fallout 3, Bioshock: Videogames or not?

Aye. Back when most games were arcade conversions (I had a c64 and an Atari 2600), you didn't even expect to complete a game. But these games didn't really have a story either. Well, not beyond "your girfriend was kidnapped, go get her.." :) Since games now have more in common with a short...

So, anyone struggle through as a non-combat character?

I'd love to know why I keep seeing this statement. Is it simply faith in Bethesda or (insert favourite dev here). That the things we don't see simply aren't possible? What technology are we supposedly lacking?

So, uh, did anyone like it?

Exploring the map outdoors was something I think I genuinely enjoyed. After the first two days or so, I started skipping any and all indoor buildings, settlements and subways. I stopped having conversations and doing quests. I just wanted to find locations and see if there was anything novel...

    Moral Ambiguity

Was it in MGS where someone said "there is no choice, only the illusion of choice"? It might have been. Or maybe it was the Matrix. Anyway, it's very applicable to FO3. Your choices at char creation seem to have very little impact on the way the game plays. Your choices in dialogue always...

    Forgive this rant, but....

I keep meaning to reinstall PS:T and finish it. But while I agree that IWD is too much combat, PS:T is the other unhealthy extreme. Why make a game if your intention is simply to tell a story? If you make an absolutely wonderful game story, but the underlying game mechanics are deadful...

Intelligent Deconstruction Review of Fallout 3

I'll just leave this here :(

Fallout 3, Bioshock: Videogames or not?

Haha, yes, it was cringe-worthy at times. I tried a lot of the time making snarky comments (not the obviously "evil" ones, but the "I don't give a crap what you think" type responses), and the NPCs were so cute. I'd insult them, and they'd respond with something like like "aren't you a...

    Enclave in FO3

You think they could have survived all those years and not known? You think the guys in the base Eden is in never wondered why they don't see him in person? Not even on a monitor, or in a picture? Honestly, that's pretty unlikely. I'm guessing the should all have known exactly what Eden was.

So, anyone struggle through as a non-combat character?

Yeah OK I'm not expecting everyone to be non-hostile. There's room for some pyschos and maniacs running around on killing sprees. But you remember that there were non-hostile raider camps in F1 (or was it 2?) Most of the major factions outside of random encounters were initially non-hostile...

So, anyone struggle through as a non-combat character?

But I didn't want to be sneaky and hide, and run away all the time. I wanted to use persuasion, charm and wit to talk rings around people and gain their confidence. I thought that by including a speech skill, that would have been possible. Unfortunately it seems that high speech does not...

So, anyone struggle through as a non-combat character?

My first playthrough* was with a gal who lived by her wits. She would shun combat, and always be ready to enter dialogue. So of course I went with CHR 8, INT 7 and high speech. Backup skills were barter and... explosives ;) I put precisely 0 points in any gun skills. I was hoping there...

    200 year old wood houses

I got Dogmeat killed pretty soon after finding him. It was either that or babysit the AI through countless situations it couldn't handle anyhow. He was shredded by Murlocs, then I ate him.

    Impressions thread for positive impressions

The truth is, once you've seen the inside of one building, ventured into one subway station, and explored five or six locations on the map, you've then seen everything F3 has to offer anyway.

    Enclave in FO3

The truth is most of the target audience don't care. After the first few hours of gameplay, your expectations should have been closely aligned with reality. Honestly, if you got to Eden and were still expecting a clever, intelligent plot... you were only fooling yourself. Most people...

Fallout 3, Bioshock: Videogames or not?

Wasn't SS2 a partnership between Looking Glass and Irrational? Not sure what input LG had, but I didn't think the design was entirely due to Irrational.

    Impressions thread for positive impressions

I can hear them saying it already... "I just beat Fallout 3!" Unfortunately it wasn't the kind of beating you take when two evenly matched fighters go at it. It was more the kind of beating you give when, upon finding a homeless guy passed out in a puddle of his own vomit, you proceed to kick...

    Enclave in FO3

It's a flawed work of fiction. What else can I say? Don't spend too much time trying to justify it. It's flawed. Broken, even. After giving a speech about "chain of command is the most important thing", the very next thing Autumn does is countermand a presidential order. Yeah, the...

    Fallout 1-2-3 related game nostalgia/subjectivity

A new Syndicate? Why.......why? Why ressurect a decades old franchise everyone has forgotten? Why if your intention is to rape it silly anyhow... Damnit, I truly think this age in gaming history will be remembered (or forgotten) as the age of unoriginality. It's the same deal in cinemas...
