So for every two points of Charisma you can have a party member. So there is a limit to them? Any suggestion on companions?

I slipped while trying to select another item, and I used some Jet. Now, I'm an addict and my str and ag went down, which now makes me suck in combat. I went cold-turkey from it (I hope that wasn't the worst thing to do) figuring it would work. I also tried to "sleep it off" but another fail...
