You seem to miss my point.

First I blame the sole existence of MMOs that have put senseless "grinding" on the pedestal of good gameplay and popularity. Second, I blame whoever's the idiot to have called MMOs "RPG" in the first place - there is only veeery few in the genre that have anything to vaguely resemble traditional roleplaying. Finally, I was referring more not to the gamers like you (or me, I often kill hours and hours with RF Online or Anarchy Online) but the young kids who are crazy about WoW and have probably never heard of or touched a PnP game, or even a computer adaptation, who think that WoW embodies what an RPG should be.

    P.S. Sorry to hear you've been playing FFXI - I hear it's a pretty horrible game >___<

It was a pretty decent game, I stopped playing about 2 years ago though.

I know its not good to only quote one simple sentence and I respect his thoughts ... but seriously. They know what they are doing with the Elder Scrolls series?

Not when comparing Morrowind with Oblivion or to Daggerfall/Arena.

I guess I have to apologize for misjudging the smear piece usefulness of this - we've passed on an Escapist bit which basically amounted to "I hated Fallout 3 because it didn't have any loot but then I realized you can think of it as a game that shouldn't have that much loot and now it's awsum agin !!!!!eighty-four" and everyone in the comments was like "Uhh there's lots of loot". This one seemed substantial by comparison but apparently not quite enough in absolute terms. We're still waiting for the true smear piece insider backlash, unless we want to face up to the idea that the game simply doesn't call for one (or that any prospective contenders have been silently beaten up).

Actually it was the most enjoyable traditional MMO I've ever played and has a pretty good community.

This guy has a handful of reasonable points with the rest being pretty terrible. He complained that stats and skills are pretty moot, though he didn't go the extra bit to find out how easy it was to build a completely maxed out build which intensifies the problem. The biggest problem is that he seems to think that it's a hardcore game and a good RPG just because he doesn't like it. Still, any reviewer who classifies them self as a casual gamer shouldn't be reviewing games and his comments really do not shine a good light on him or his peers because he seems to work with a lot of like minded incompetent fools (what a shock). I did enjoy the other gaming journalists comment as s/he was ripping on this guy for having no journalistic integrity.

Yeah, once he gets to it but he misses all of the gameplay problems other than the bugs. I can't say that I much liked it but I rarely like video reviews (most people just don't have the voice for it).

    Read it.

Jones should have remained silent. If he was so worried about keeping his job- what does he think coming out now, and saying that he's basically a journalist with no scruples, is going to do? The same people who "pressured" him to vote Fallout 3 GOTY probably won't bat an eyelash to fire him in order to preserve their own dubious integrity and that of their site. And if they don't fire him- then screw them for tacitly confirming what's been suspected for all these years. That they're nothing but a bunch of whores.(no offense to real sex workers intended)

But you know what? To hell with it. It is too late now. Thanks to sellouts like him, and the rest of the Gaming Press, who backed Bethesda's hype machine, Fallout 3 has sold so many units that it's guaranteed we'll be force fed more of this brand of tripe in the future. Thanks for all the negative reinforcement, Gaming Press.

Sure, Jones doesn't deserve to shoulder all of the blame for this on his own, but as the saying goes- the nail that sticks out gets hammered. Too bad it'll be his peers(hypocrites) AND gamers doing the hammering.

    Whatever...

Surely, if what he says is true, the real issue is that a lot of game reviewers, including this guy, lack spines and the ability to form their own opinions. To blame Bethesda for his own lack of ability to properly do his job is just weak.

At least he's speaking his mind now. I guess that counts for something.

This article doesn't really absolve Mr. Jones of much but does tell us some things about the gaming press we sort of knew but now really know. First that impressions come more from peers than the actual game in many cases. 10 hours into a 40 hour game isn't enough to critique it. Thats like watching the first 20 minutes of a movie. Also that who made a game matters a great deal. Fallout 3 by Silicon Knights and I gaurentee that reviews of that game will mention crippling bugs present.

I take issue with this guy on a number of fronts.

First off, why not just vote how you want? I'm guessing the votes aren't made public and I highly doubt it's a unanimous vote. So what does he care if he votes his mind.

Secondly, the commercials didn't really seem to be promising a Halo BioShock hybrid. This seems pretty rediculous consider that would basically just be Half-Life in my mind as BioShock was pretty watered down to begin with and if you stripped more RPG out of it all you'd really have was a basic inventory, and weapons progression.

Finally, it is too late to speak out. This game came out before Halloween. Now it's a New Year. You had almost four months to speak out while it was still fairly relevant and a lot of GotY's were still being decided.

I understand that it's not his game, I think that's what he was talking about when he talked about the inventory. I don't think he wanted it dumbed down, he just was expecting it to be.

    Weird.

I really can't wrap my head around why someone would write this article.

Assuming it's true, assuming he didn't like Fallout 3 he's declared himself a hypocrite and a liar for his vote. "I fold under peer pressure." isn't a character trait he should be flaunting on his next job interview (Which might be pretty freakin' soon.)

If it's not true? Who's he catering to? Who is he trying to redeem himself with? It's not the hard core RPG crowd, if his biggest exposure was the Dragon Quest games (which are fun diversions) it's no wonder he sounded confused at open world game play. JRPGs are nothing if not linear. Even the point in every game where you can reach "the world map" your path is still painfully limited.

So why? Why does he rail against a game he didn't like in a genre he doesn't understand when it's too late for ANYONE to care?

He either lost a bet or there was a contest for biggest douche in gaming.

Actually you guys are missing the point.

He actually feared the "Attack of the Beth-fanboys" in making his decision...

I miss the days when we were the ones they were fearing. :(

Don't worry, they will fear us one day again.

We're like some ancient evil that has gone into the recesses of the human consciousness, waiting, watching.

And while journalists may have forgotten us for the time being they can never escape the feeling that someone is observing them, waiting for a moment of opportunity...
