David Bieber given Life for Police Murder

I don't know how well this has been covered by the media overseas, but it's been everywhere here.

BBC News Article[/url]]A former US marine has been jailed for life for the murder of Pc Ian Broadhurst, who was shot in Leeds on Boxing Day 2003.

David Bieber, 38, was also convicted of the attempted murders of Pcs Neil Roper and James Banks.
...
Bieber had fled to the UK after he was wanted in the US for conspiracy to commit murder. He started a new life using the alias Nathan Coleman.
He's tried to make a mockery of the court by concocting a story about an "American friend" committing the murder, but that's not the worst part. When the police caught up to him, he said to them "You wouldn't shoot an unarmed man, would you?" disgusting.

Was anyone else aware of this? I know the guy was on the american "Most Wanted" list for a while (well, according to the news on ITV), but I'm wondering whether it's actually been followed by the US news.

There have also been calls to extradite him to Florida for involvement in (two?) murders there, but that can't go ahead because we don't extradite to states with the death penalty.

To bad you Euros dont have a death penalty...............
Well, that depends upon your point of view. We had the death penalty, but we got rid of it. I'm sure you can work out some of the reasons for doing so.

Anyway, you didn't answer my question.

Also, I didn't mention, this happened in my home city (for those who didn't make the connection). It's particularly scary because this guy worked as a doorman for a pub just down the road from me, which my two elder brothers both frequented (during the time he worked there), he also worked as a doorman at several nightclubs in Leeds, which my brothers (and my younger sister) have also visited semi-regularly.
It's strange when something like this happens so close to home.

Ive heard it mentioned a little in the local press, mainly how Fla wants to fry his ass. National press, zilch.

Yeah, I heardf about it back on Boxing day, but I haven't heard about the bullshit in court until now. Thanks for that.

Just do what Israel did when tracking down former Nazi war criminals from WW2, jsut carry out a covert opperation to kidnap and fry him.

But I can see the point in not having a death penalty.

1) The only people who fry are the poor ones who cant afford a good lawer

2) The last person hung in New Zealand (before they changed the law) was later found to not have commited the crime.

That being said there are some people who really do need a bullet, no second chance given, take them out back and turn them into an organ donner.

Yes, there was a similar thing here with the last guy to be hanged (or was it the last woman? I forget). Whilst I have no problem with capital punishment per se, I think it should only ever be done when there is absolutely no doubt, which is a pretty rare occurrence. Sometimes there is no real alternative to capital punishment, but I do not think our (the British) legal system is accurate enough for it to be morally acceptable.

Ya I havent heard it at all in the news...that being national since local wouldnt cover it.

I would rather die than spend life in prison by the way. Not that I hope that fact ever becomes relevant.

The death penalty?

To me it is naturally good to let people decide over their own lives from an early stage, and be given a great deal of legal liberty. Most people can handle it. People who fuck up however should be punished way harder than they generally are today, which would mean that the average Joe would be given much more control of himself. If you fuck up majorly, by for instance raping/killing someone, I believe you should be executed. I see nothing wrong with the death penalty, as long as there is of course no (what we consider to be) reasonable doubt conserning the guilt of the accused, which is alas very rare. Why? Because in a democracy it's in the end the law abiding mob that forms the society (even though there's always a bunch of suits atop it all). Today we have bestowed ourselves with the power of robbing people from their freedom by locking them up and throwing away the key, and I don't think the step to robbing them from their 'right to exist' is all that big. Quite frankly, if I would have to choose between instant death and slipping away into nothingness to never feel anything ever again, or spending the rest of my miserable life behind bars and sharing cell with Buba, I'd choose the first alternative. The death penalty is more humane than life in prison if you ask me.

Agreed. There should also be an option for a life without parol (10-15 years in californie) convicts to choose the death penalty if they dont want to waste away in prision.
While it might defeat justice to let them take the easy way out, it also relives the public of hte tax burden of paying to keep the assholes nogood life alive and in humane prison conditions for the rest of his life.

They should also execute admen that make those anoying jingles that wont leave your mind.

I actually agree. Furthermore, I think that basically anyone should be able to go to a special type of clinic and get killed in a convenient way. If someone is determined to die, it will be to a much greater damage to society if he chooses to jump in front of a train for instance. And even though there are 'rather' convenient ways to wack yourself, like gassing yourself to death with cole oxide in a car, someone will find your carcass and most likely not be too happy about it. One might argue that if such clinics were to be established, more people would commit suicide due to the conveniency, but I really don't think so. And even if that was the case, people should be able to decide for themselves if they want to die.
