dealing with death claws

Junkmaster
Dear Fellow Tactics folks-

My little squad has been sightseeing in the wasteland, looking for random encounters for experience and target practice. My squad is Me, Stitch and Farsight.

Low and behold, we run into a pack of dogs fighting off at least two Deathclaws. The deathclaws quickly dispatch the dogs ahd I figure, oh what the hell, lets see what kind of experience killing a deathclaw can do.

Putting my folks in sneak and set up an ambush and the other tried to find out where the two death claws had gone. Bad idea. The deathclaw got in, and althoug we did some serious damage to the big guy, he creamed the lot of us.

Any suggestions for killing deathclaws early in the game, or is it best to avoid them?

Also, don't the deathclaws look like the standbys from "where the wilds things are."

Cheers!

Through the whole game I seriously avoid them. I hate the pitch black special encounter. The only thing I can recommend is to use mines and drive them through the minefield.

i ran them over with the hummer. it disables them until you take care of their friends.

try to hit them in the sensitive spots: eyes, head and legs so that they'll get easier to kill.

and later on you'll get the heavy and energy weapons. then the deathclaws won't be a problem.
the super-mutants and the robots will. :-)

Early in the game, it's mines and explosives to kill deathclaws,
you just don't have the firepower to stop them before they get
to you. If you some high small weapons characters (like Farsight), you can go for criticals, but early on, that takes a lot of luck. I think going for the head is better than the
legs, as you only need one crit. to knock him out.

Also, the combat shotguns are key, once you get them.

Remember the church in that hostage rescue mission, the one
where you first encounter deathclaws? That was a lot of fun,
you can put all of your characters but one on the roof, have
one guy get the DC's attention and run like hell, and then
watch everyone on the roof slaughter the helpless deathclaws
from above and behind.

Critically hitting their legs cripples them. They won't be able to run...

My experience has been that fire based weapons work extremely well against the deathclaws, as they had in the two previous versions of Fallout. Early in the game, incendiary grenades were the way to go for me.

I always find that shotguns, with flechette shells, are brilliant for destroying deathclaws, as they have no armour. Unfortunately, you have to stand very close for them to have any effect...
