Every time they fuck something up, they can just say it's a different universe, and every ending can be canon at once.

It's a perfectly nice idea, but 1) Saying it's canon gets more mouth breathers to watch the show and 2) He already said it was canon, if he reverses course he'd look like a retard, so he'll just stick to it. And why shouldn't he? 90% of the viewers won't care, and 5% will just bend the lore over backwards to make whatever Johnny Nolan says fit.
