Man, you can use a Glide WRAPPER to emulate the Glide API at acceptable speeds with todays cards. Hell, I was able to emulate it pretty well with my old dumpy ATI 128 Rage Fury on shitty ATI drivers. Don't buy 3DFx cards, 3DFx is out of business (good riddance), so no official driver support, and the cards suck by today's standards.
nVidia all the way. Good drivers, good chipset, good cards. My Geforce2 MX 400 cost me only $60 and plays virtually all the games I play (like UT, Quake III, etc) at decent framerates.
