F1 & F2, differences?

I've been playing F2 alot the last three years and I love the game. I was planning to buy F1 back in 1998 but I read it had a time limit of 150 days. According to this message board that time limit is removed with later patches. Is this true?

I,m never in a hurry when playing Fallout so 150 days sounds like a short visit to me. Having the time limit removed would make a big difference for me.

Otherwise, what are the differences between F1 and F2? What is worse/better in Fallout 1?

The time limit is removed with the patch. It gets put to 13 years.
Differnces. On the bad side. You do not have much control over your NPC's. Even less then in F2. You can give them better weapons but you can not give them better armour. They have a tendency to get shot to pieces if you encounter a well armed foe. They also do not level up with you like in F2. The game is not that big as F2 neither. This means less towns and less quests.
On the good side. NPC's become mules as even 1 of them (not counting dogmeat) can carry a lot of stuff as long as you barter it with them. If you try to plant it on them then you get a message that their is no more space, but with bartering it always works. The setting is also a lot better then F2's. More destruction less civilization. It gives you a more mad max feel. That is what i can think of for now.
I would say that while F2 was a lot better in a lot of aspects F1 is still the classic and worth having. I still play it from time to time and even more then F2.

RE: F1 & F2, differences?

150 days isn't as short a time as it would seem from Fo2, in 2 travel takes much longer, plus,in the original, you can extend that time with some money.
Fallout 1 is alot faster when you save/load or use exit grids, but NPC control can suck unless you ENJOY burst shots to the back and watching your NPCs die.

RE: F1 & F2, differences?

There are tons of references to FO1 in FO2, so if you've never played the original, many of the references and jokes are probably going right over your head. If nothing else, you will want to play FO1 to fill out the history of the saga. It will help you appreciate FO2's writing even more.

The 150 days is not really a time limit, it is the time you have to find a water chip before your vault's water supply runs out... that's how the story begins, and, as you probably guessed after playing FO2, that is truly only the beginning. Definitely get the v1.1 patch, though. Many fixes, including the actual time limit issue (which is really not an issue, as you'll see).

The main thing you will find in FO1 is there is less of everything. Of course, it should come as no surprise that the first game in the series would be smaller than the sequel. Less equipment choices, less quests, a smaller world map, less perks, less NPC control (but also less bugs). Having cut your teeth on FO2, you may sometimes feel a little restricted in FO1. Still, the gameplay and story are just as strong, and except for a few control (interface) issues that were improved for FO2, you are going to love FO1 just as much. One aspect in which FO1 is not smaller than FO2 is in it's overall level of kickass-ness.

I also felt a stronger sense of purpose in FO1... I never got that aimless feeling of not knowing where to go next like I have in FO2. I think FO1's plot was better scripted, while still remaining open-ended and non-linear.
