Mutiple Special Encounters of the Same Kind!

Why am I stuck getting the same special encounter over, and over in the same game. I have a luck 10, and 150% + outdoorsman skill yet I kept getting the dogmeat special encounter. It was at least ten times. What the hell? It does get annoying after awhile. Grrr...

RE: Mutiple Special Encounters of the Same Kind!

This has happened to me... I don't remember the particulars, but I usually have 4 - 6 Luck and a relatively low Outdoorsman skill, so I don't think that factors in. It was also a different encounter, something pointless, that kept repeating. Just another random glitch, I think.

RE: Mutiple Special Encounters of the Same Kind!

Special encounters are usually determined by different factors. You mentioned two of them. Here are some others I can think of right now:

1. Your relative postion on the map, i.e. where you are. For examble, you can only meet the special merchant that sells the Alien Blaster around north of Modoc.

2. You levels. Depending on the levels you have, you'll get different encounters and enemies accordingly.

3. Time. It has occured to me that the more unique encounters usually only appears later in game time.

4./5. These two I am not sure of at all. The NPCs you have, and the quests you maybe doing at the time. I have only heard that it may be related.

Nah, I don't think it works that way. Which enemies you encounter depend on where you are. If you go to Navarro at level 1 you'll meet Enclave patrols; if you go to Arroyo at level 50 you'll meet geckos. There may be a few exceptions like robber caves, but those are kinda optional.

Or that could just be because you got the Luck upgrade in NCR and perks like Explorer which you didn't have to begin with.

I know of nothing like that. Except meeting Morton's brothas.

I have one possible answer to Volourn, though. I'll quote from my walkthrough again:

"Sometimes when you leave a special encounter location for the first time it remains labelled "Unknown". In this case you may find it again somewhere else, and the location is then moved to where you are at that time. The same will be true if you decline to enter the location when you first find it."

The "solution": exit and re-enter the place until it says "Cafe of Broken Dreams" instead of "Unknown". Then it should stay in place.

RE: Mutiple Special Encounters of the Same Kind!

Per: That's a good hunch; however that isn't the case. The first time I entered Cafe of Broken Dreams I picked up Dogmeat, and left K-9 there. That was near NCR. Next I saw the cafe over by SF; entered it, and saw that K-9 was still there. No big deal; it is just plainly weird. That's all.

Going off topic...

Yep, I've also had some special locations like this move even when they'd been "identified" earlier. (Most notably, the Café of Broken Dreams :-))

[Off-topic] But say, Per, is that walkthrough completed yet? If not, any ETA? If so, where can I find it? I need more material to read, heck, might even learn a new trick here and there. ;-) Or any novels or quality fan fiction out there perhaps? (I did take part in a thread about a Fallout novel some time ago here, I'll go take another look at it once I post this ;-))

I was a bit unclear; I didn't mean that it "resets", just that it relocates. It would still be the same map with the same item and critter contents etc. You didn't say if your Cafe was called "Cafe" or still "Unknown" when you found it again, do you remember which it was?

Oops, I guess that settles that then. As far as I can recall it has only happened to me for "unidentified" encounters.

It's pretty completed, it's just some obscure tricky stuff that eludes my grasp (such as the Jet Antidote bug and +LK from pariah dog) and I'm a perfectionist, or at least a semi-perfectionist. Also I was thinking maybe I should play a thorough "stupid" game first, but I suppose there's no reason you should have to wait for that. Tell you what, I'll go over the whole thing quickly and see there are no glaring misteaks and in a few days I'll post a link to it (touch wood).

RE: Mutiple Special Encounters of the Same Kind!

It was definitely called Cafe. Like I said earlier; no big deal. Just fraky, and this is the only special encounter that repeats in such a way. It only happened in my latest run through (my 3rd) which is it caught me off guard. Thanks for the trying to clear the miss up.
