Petrol Prices

Yeah, but how much of that is from government taxes? And how much do you spend per week filling up your car and stuff? I'm working construction for the summer, and because I travel to different job sites around the state, I have to fill my truck up a minimum of 2 times a week. 15 gallon tank x 2 fills a week x around $2.15 a gallon= about $65. Thats $65 a week out of my paycheck x the 12 weeks i will/have been working = $780. That's a lot of money.

Right, as if that doesn't happen around here.

So what? I bet if you had something cheaper than ours, and the price raised, you guys would bitch about it. Pfft... We are allowed to groan about anything, and stuff. Besides, your cars are more economical than ours, and you have a lot less drivers in certain countries...

I'll bet it doesn't. At least not on the scale, nor in the numbers that it does here.

I remember last year I was complaining about Chicago gas being almost $2 a gallon. Now it's kind of worse:

We just bought fuel from our local 'bargain' station for $1.07/L. To put that in perspective, last year it was about 90c/L on average. The production is being increased to lower prices but I don't know how much impact it will have. Damn it OPEC has so much power, they really can hold the whole world to ransom (as long as America is happy, which consumes about a quarter of the world's oil) It's pretty terrible everywhere but I hope that atleast it discourages unneccessary travel. Interestingly, diesel prices have also increased exponentially in the last twelve months in Australia. This is probably because government subsidies have been cut even while prices rise.

yup, i don't complain about gas prices here western germany pays about 0.70 or so per liter. which converted for price and to the gallon comes out to about $4 or $5 per gallon. Not to mention the average pay for a job in Germany isn't quite as good as in the US. Then prices on other items in Europe is 2-3 or more times as much as the same thing in the US. The bottom line is Americans are acting just so poorly to the situation. All you have to do is cut back on travel and not drive wherever you go. Many americans tend to drive even down to the local grocery store even if it's only a few blocks away. Unless they live in a large city, people there tend to walk more.

Lost, you don't seem to understand the American situation. Most grocery stores aren't just a couple of blocks away. The nearest one to my house is about a mile and a half away. To get to work and back home, I drive about a minimum of 40 miles. Its not possible to "cut back on travel." The distances that we have to travel make it illogical, inefficient, and basically stupid to walk. Nothing would ever get done.

hey dude don' get mad at me! i haven't been everywhere, most places i've been to has a grocery store VERY CLOSE. I've been to a few places where the grocery store was fairly far away was in the mountains or parts of large cities. Part of the problem is the fact that many americans believe that they should drive whatever car they want to drive regardless of the gas consumption. Those kind of people don't care if their car gets only a few km to the gallon, just as long as they like their car. Others won't take mass transit because they want their own car that they can do whatever they want with.

I'll bet it does. Hah! Now what?

It appears we're stuck.

I'm not mad at you, I was just tryin to prove a point. dont worry!

But another thing about the mass transit. It isn't available (at least in an efficient form) in most areas. Cities, and some of the places around them, have public buses which a lot of people use, but in someplace like where I live, public transportation just isn't an option.

That's your fault then. You cannot seriously use that as an argument. If you want to have a "gas-guzzler", then that's your choice.

Fair enough, the oil price is going to affect you more than others. For most city-dwellers though, there's not likely to be that big a difference between usage in Europe and the US.
