Nope. I hated the original. I am pretty much done with the shooter genre until Halflife 3 comes out...or Duke Nukem Forever IF it comes out.

I'm on my fourth XBox 360. The first two had DVD drive failures and the third had the Red Ring of Death. My average life span is just under 6 months. On the bright side Microsoft does replace them promptly. On the down side getting liscences transferred from console to console is a hellish ordeal. Their phone reps need to be taken out and whipped.

This reminds me of "A Ticket to Tranai" by Robert Sheckley - the part where the guy worked for a company that researched how to make technology less durable so that people buy more of it =)

I've actually been very lucky. My roommate spilled tea right on the console, while it was vertically up. Not only did it go in but it came out from the bottom. The console got a red ring and it went away in 30 mins on its own. That was the weirdest and it has been through a lot more crap and it still works. You know why? Because I paid that 50 extra bucks to get a warranty, if I didn't have warranty it would break a long time ago. That's just how electronics work with me.

As far as buying a console, why the hell not? There is a whole bunch of games that I'd rather play on a console: adventure platforming games, fighters, racers, etc are more fun on a big screen with a controller on a couch. You can also watch DVD's in them, I don't even shop for DVD players.

Problem with consoles DVD are that they are not region free.

How often do you watch DVD's from other regions? I've never had that problem but maybe more people do than I think. You can watch a bunch of different formats on it though and you can also stream stuff from your PC to watch on your TV through your network with the 360. As far as PS3, other Blu Ray players are not much cheaper so why not just get it?

Wait a year and any BR-Player will be far cheaper than any console can ever be. Just like the dvd-players.

In a year, the PS3 will be cheaper as well. It may not become as cheap as BR players but it will have more value.

why dont these consoles with their own OSes have a recovery CD to recover the OS in case there was a problem?

It is already outdated, so more value is not really true

I've had my 360 for two years now. No RROD yet. I wish it happenned before the end of the three years warranty though.

Then again, I don't use it a lot. Less than one hour a week now that I have a computer again.

I meant that PS3 will still have more value than stand alone BR players. I don't get how it's already outdated though? If anything, in a year it will have more value because more games will come out, no? There are some games that will raise its value significantly this year, at least for me.

But the hardware will be the same old one, just like the graphics. So why more value? Everything looses value over time. While the BR players will drop in price the PS3 will have old hardware for old games and a BR player for a much higher price. Their is no point in buying this next year if you want a BR player. And if you are a gamer that want a BR player it would be smarter to wait for the next generation. Invest your money otherwise till then (Beamer/Sound etc.)

Ah so the red ring is symbolic of a Microsoft ass raping.

my question still stands, why do they not include a "recovery" disc that lets you reinstall the OS of the console rather than having to ship it back...

what a bunch of fucking idiots.

Yes I have a warranty. I will send it in, but it's just the fact that I should not have to that bugs me.

Wait till next generation? So, you're saying one should only buy consoles the year they come out?

Actually, it's smart to wait for another half a year or so to buy a PS3, both because of lower price but also because then it will have many more good games to play.

I had a console since launch and it RROD on me last spring, I simply said screw and went out and purchased a brand new Elite and have yet to send in my old box for "repairs". To be honest with you the RROD is a small price to pay for a console that has a great library and an excellent online service. Some of my greatest memories in online gaming have come from Xbox live and I've been playing online since 2003, I really hope this time they give you a brand new 360 rather than a "refurbished" 2006 model.
