So as of Fallout 3, ghouls can be made instantly, huh?

[spoiler:76dfc98c6e]I think because it happened so sudden no one knows yet what the exact cause was, hence why the NCR thinks it was some kind bomb used by the Legion.

When you explore Camp Searchlight and find the dead Legionnaires and the note on their body you discover the true cause, as well as a way of wiping out the Legion at Cottonwood Cove.[/spoiler:76dfc98c6e]

In a perfect world, maybe. But he mentioned something about not so much being stationed there as not willing to leave, since he had friends still there or something. I never really did much in searchlight...

Well, there is at least one location where I like their presence: The nuclear test site. There it makes the most sense too, because people living close to it could have been transformed into ghoul over many years.

Even so, Ghoulification takes more than just seven years, its a gradual process as any faster is simply radiation poisoning.

Also, some other elements than radiation also come into play.

There has been a time, where I thought that all existing ghouls came out of the necropolis vault. :(

    Don't forget the Reservation Lexx.

Perhaps two sources off Ghouls would have been better, and not anymore, prevent anything like running zombie ones.

Edit: Darn, forgot the original concept for NORAD, a.k.a. the Crater, home to Glowing Ones.

The slight kink in that logic is that an NCR patrol goes from Searchlight to Ranger Station Charlie and back again.

A better idea would have been if the "accident" happened during the previous war with the Legion, the NCR didn't let the survivors leave the place because they were beyond salvation anyway at that point, and after four years most of them turned into ghouls.

Thing about searchlight, you never find out how long it's been since the attack happened. Could've been weeks for all we know.

I dunno, I found them to be a lot fewer now, and the ones I've met were at locations that made sense. I only met a feral ghoul once or twice maybe just randomly on open terrain. Also, didn't FO1 have ghouls that are technically 'feral'? Like some of the ones in Necropolis?

One thing I do hate is the all sorts of upgraded ghouls, I'd love to have ghouls as intended - fragile abominations that barely manage to survive, not to mention fight effectively.

It's a game after all. Yeah, it doesn't seem logical, but whatever.
Besides I liked the idea, makes the Legion even more evil! :)

[spoiler:e3ceccb6a3]By the way, you can read on a note in the Fire Station where the radioactive barrels were opened, that Vulpes Inculta was behind the attack on Camp Searchlight. He is so badass. First teaches the profligate troops of the NCR a lesson at Searchlight and then taught the depraved degenerates of Nipton a lesson.[/spoiler:e3ceccb6a3]

Sure, and the survivors waited to turn into ghouls just because.
Also I thought it took waaaaay longer than weeks to become a ghoul.

Ok, there were ghouls like crazy in fo2 who were feral. Random encounters I have killed thousands of what are basically feral ghouls

I don't see how any ghoul left from the original game could not be feral. Considering by Fallout 1, a great number of ghouls had already become feral, we're talking almost 100 years later.

Ghouls being made in a short period of time in Fallout 3 (instantaneous), and Fallout: New Vegas is just ridiculous. Even if Moira could be turned into a ghoul that quickly, being that close to the heat and blast would have vaporized her.

Do we actually know how long it takes for a ghoul to turn? And do we know that there is some sort of "set rate" for the ghoulification process? Who's to say it can't take more or less time based on radiation exposure? And is FEV required to create ghouls if we discount Fallout 3?
