Who cares? Yes, it's a mediocre game, critiqued by even more mediocre minds that expired during or well before the time they spent waiting for a game they had every bit of prior evidence would end up like this.

They have to have a random draw for essential NPC's. I got attacked on the road by orcs and some merchant and his guard got involved, the merchant ended up dead while his guard was essential. I couldn't even interact with him why the fuck was he essential.

All the characters who can actually have an impact are essential, so basically the exact opposite of Obsidian's design doctrine.

I don't really have any sort of hard problem with this, it's just the function where it's to maintain story integrity where the main story is so disjointed and then ties itself together with outlandish afterthought. I'm less of the moral sandbox kind of player and I'm okay with characters being essential, but still being able to fire on them and make idiotic scenes I feel should have been reined in then.

there is no reason for a character to ever be essential when it's just as easy for them to be flagged protected, and the decision left to the player on if they are "essential."

Maybe they got a writer other than Emil to do it? Gotta agree with others though, given the base story, it's not hard to get an improvement. As a side note, did anyone get reminded of RoboCop when reading the dialogue for robo-brains? It honsetly reminded me of this,

Or have a big ass tag above their head that shows whether you can kill them or not but they'll all probably be essential and Bethesda's good "writer" Emil will make them break the fourth wall flaunting their immortality with lines like "Despite getting mauled by a Deathclaw I'm absolutely fine after a few seconds of kneeling cuz I'm immortal!".

It seems they do actually use someone else for the DLC writing, because the quality in the likes of the Pitt (Wild Bill for example) is leagues ahead of the schlock in the main game, and it seems the same trend is continuing in Fallout 4.

Really?! That's good to hear. Finally a silver lining! Based of your radatsku(?) posts I'm pretty sure I can trust you as a meter for good writes...

Yea because Mama Murphy and that whole crew of awful characters that occupies Sanctuary are SO ESSENTIAL to the plot...

    Except not.

Is the story good enough for the price?

This is not even the worst example. The fucking dog is essential for the purposes of the plot, yes. If it dies, now way we could find Kellog, right? No, why can't we have alternative? THERE'S AN ENCOUNTER IN THE WASTES WITH THE GUY WHO'S SELLING A DOG! Why not him? Or why not diamond city or goodneighbor have a nursery? This fucking guy is like mocking this linear story.

Fine, if you're that hungry for them to build on Fallout 4's rich storytelling to accommodate this.

I don't know if we can go very in depth into the Automatron vs a dime bag of weed question, here. I guess it comes down to the fact that if you're asking, you've probably already played Fallout 4, and if Fallout 4 was something you wanted to come back to. A lot of people here obviously cannot escape Fallout 4, so my advice is YES, YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED TO BUY THIS DLC.

Flagging an NPC as protected instead of essential has nothing to do with story, it's a gameplay mechanic, one that goes a long way in giving a player a sense of freedom from a company that claims that as their #1 selling point.
