Oh, that's right. I like to imagine that it fires the MFC as the hi-velocity projectile. It drains the cell quickly to power the coils, and then launches the semi empty shell out, which explodes on contact.

Gauss Rifle is a coil gun (which doesn't explain the blue cloud, unless the projectile became charged with electricity and discharged it upon hitt- Sorry, my brain is hurting typing that out.)

Didn't mean looks exactly like it. I can probably make a very convincing replica (none-functioning obviously) using one of these drill as a bases then adding to it.

so, here's a question. What are plasma grenades?they go boom, but also melt the hapless denizens of the wasteland into a puddle.

They are throwing weapons with plasma type damage.
    Whoops, not in Xbox-wasteland-wonderland.
In FO3 it's an explosive, with the death animations of the plasma weapons.
I really like that they readded the good ol' P94, my old favorite, and that it needs huge amounts of strength.
I hope that miniguns will have that, too.
That's something that I found weird about the original Fallouts, that miniguns could be used by normal people without power armor (though they needed 7 strength, it could be wielded by people without any augmentation).
It would be nice if you could use miniguns and really heavy ordnance only with power armor equipped, because that was one of the purposes for power armor, anyway.

@Mr. Bazooka: I'd put my money on them being explosives; they just deal plasma-type damage.

@Hassknecht: I think its fair the way it is; if you have seven strength, you have seven strength. If you have normally, you have seven strength. If you have seven strength because of the bonus power armor gives you, then you have seven strength. Unforunately, due to what is undoubtedly a mixture of lazyness, uncreativity and engine difficulties, the game doesn't scale your character's appearance based on strength. There should be a system where the higher your strength, the more your character is built. Get up in to the seven+ range, and you start to look like Predator-era Arnold.

Didn't Oblivion do that; have your character look more ripped as your strength improved?

Yeah, my problem is that power armor is supposed to make you much stronger than a human can possibly be. With a power armor, you should have like, 40 strength, regardless of how strong you would be without it. That is the whole point of the power armor, being much stronger than the strongest human, and not even Predator-era Aahnold can use a minigun in real life.
But ok, it's a limitation of the SPECIAL system. Maybe you could work around it with a temporary perk "heavy ordnance" that you get while wearing power armor (or being a super mutant) that allows you to use miniguns (the plasmacaster looks like it could be used by a strong human, though).
At least, strength will have a purpose other than determining your carry weight and melee damage again, that's pretty cool.

/edit: Also, there is no such thing as plasma type damage in Fallout 3. There is just damage. Plasmagrenades are explosives with a different explosion and death animation.

the plasma grenade comment was meant to be thought provoking. i never used them in fallout or fallout 2 because my throwing skill was always horrendous. I just hope that the p94 can be turboed for the same devastating results that could be unleashed in F1. six shots per turn was enough to reduce even the mightiest wasteland monsters to puddles. it was nerfed in f2

The miniguns in the games? Yeah, maybe not. But the M134 used *in* the movie by Jesse Ventura? There are version of that made to be wielded by foot soldiers. And they're also a larger, heavier caliber than the 5mm used in the game.

I do agree with you though. Power armor should make you a walking tank; there should be Power-armor designed weapons. Specialized shit that's A) Heavy B) huge-fucking-firepower, C) integrates with the PA for special functionality/etc. And which may rely on the PA for firecontrol; Without a functioning suit of PA, you couldn't fire the weapon at all. Give you decent extra melee damage, but some kickass extra functionality with PowerFists etc.

Not so sure on that. M134 fires 50 Bullets a second. Not only is the gun heavy, i don't think a soldier has the capacity to fire or carry that amount of ammunition.

Minigun's just aren't feasible for foot soldiers, hence Belt fed support weapons.

Feasible? Not really. Awesome? Hell yes. Even a PA equipped soldier would have to have one hell of an amount of ammunition, something which would be difficult to maintain even when you're a strong as a dozen horses. It'd simply occupy too much space to be feasible.

Also miniguns and modern day gatling guns *are* belt fed weapons, and typically support when they're mounted on anything other than a AC130 or an A-10.

I'd definitely say a well trained, skilled soldier could effectively hold/aim/fire a M134. Hump it around in the field all day? Not outside of an action movie, but I can see people doing it. Yes, 50 rounds of 7.62NATO a second is a lot of recoil, but as was pointed out, it's heavy, and that helps alot.

    Agreed.

Yeah, but not in the "Traditional" sense. You know what i meant =P

Maybe, maybe not. Either way you'd need to be built like a truck and personally i don't see if being effectively fired. Fired yes, effectively no. Especially not in 7.62.

The M134 was never intended to be wielded on foot/standing up. The whole setup is really, really heavy (without ammo and power source about 30kg), and the kickback of the gun is too much for EVERY man (even Jesse Ventura, who fired blanks and wore a bulletproof vest and mask because of the violently ejecting spent cases and had a power chord running down his pantlegs as batteries would have been fucking heavy). It would push you over in seconds, and your ammunition would be wasted shortly after.
7.62mm is not to be fucked with. Try a M14 or a G3, they kick like a mule at full auto, and they fire pretty slowly. Standing up, the M134 can't be used.
The 5.56mm XM214 is even less usefull. 10000 5.56mm rpm, who needs that?
A realistic gatling-type gun for PA soldiers would be a three barreled version of M134. Much less weight but still enough barrels to allow extended firing without overheating.
6000 rpm is pointless, ~1400 rpm (the good ol' MG42 fired about 1200 rpm, and even that was at the edge of insanity :D) are more than enough.
A PA soldier could also wield a M2HB machinegun, or something bigger. Russian 14.5mm for example. That would make much more sense.
But to hell with realism, gatlings are fucking awesome.
They just look a little ridiculous on normal people :D
