Encased: a post-apocalyptic sci-fi RPG in development

    What is it: Modern tactical RPG, which is all about exploration and survival inside a locked-up territory, created by an ancient race of unknown origin. It is a spiritual successor to famous isometric RPGs of the early 00s.


    Status: End of the pre-production


    Dates: Early access in 2019.


    Who are we: Dark Crystal Games - an indie gamedev studio located in Saint-Petersburg. Currently, we have thirteen experienced developers, who worked on such projects as Divinity: Original Sin (DOSEE и DOS2), Life Is Feudal: Forest Village, Leviathan: The Last Day of The Decade, and also participated in developing games like King's Bounty: Legions, Braveland and others.


    Why are we here: To be brought to the light! To communicate. To answer any questions. To receive some feedback.





    Needles of oscilloscopes are quivering: the radio which has been silent for many days suddenly comes to life. The speakers are filled with static, however you can hear soft, but clear voice:

    This is a message for those who dwell in the place where No Mutants are Allowed. For those who has survived the explosion.

    This broadcast uses an encrypted channel. The frequency is changing constantly, so remember the code sign: Dark Crystal Games. Locked up in a bunker of the Forefathers, we are writing a chronicle of the new world.

    This is a story about the people living under the Dome. About the atomic flame that has scorched the Earth, about cultists who devour the flesh of their God, about the blind creatures walking in the darkness amidst the dead men covered with fireflies.

    Scientists say that the Dome seems to grow roots into the soil: the land under this desert is gashed with numerous facilities created by the unknown race. Nobody knows what happened to them. Perhaps they are still here, watching us through the thousands of cameras, waiting for the moment to return. We don’t know.

    This broadcast is a guide to our database. Art, chronicles, news, log entries and screenshots.

    The Maelstrom is coming and the contact is about to be lost. This is not the last broadcast: we are going to be on air on a regular basis, letting you know what is going on in the area covered by the Dome. This is important. We wish to believe that this world still has someone except us.

    Hi! We would like to tell you about the game we are currently working on.

    Meet Encased - the postapocalyptic single-player tactical RPG with the old-school spirit and a modern design. It features a turn-based combat system and isometric camera.

    The action takes place on in a desert covered with a gigantic semi-penetrable dome of mysterious origin, which isolate it from the rest of the world. Here lie the ruins of an ancient technologically advanced civilization that are filled with artifacts, traps, and anomalies.



    After the nuclear war, a corporation that was researching ancient technologies collapsed, and the remains of its staff founded a few factions, each having its own vision of humanity’s future.

    Depending on the profession defined by the player during character creation, some unique dialogue and interaction options appear. Encased has no character classes - the flexible system of skills and attributes allows to make your character whoever you want.

    Not counting the prologue, Encased is an open-world game. The global map consists of separately loaded areas, with random events that may occur during the translocation.






    During the development, we draw our inspiration from such pieces as Fallout 1-2 and "Roadside Picnic".

    Although Encased is the first project for Dark Crystal Games, it is not the first game for our team members. Many of us participated in creating few critically acclaimed games.

    Hello everyone!

    Just as we promised, here is another update. Currently, we are working on:

    3) A playable demo, which we are planning to have operational by 15th of May.

    It’s Dark Crystal Games again. It’s been a while since our last update, so we wanted you to know that we’re doing good. The development of “Encased” is in progress, and we would like to share some fresh news about our project.





    The first and the most important update: Encased is officially announced (we would like to thank Proletären and Black Angel for sharing some of our updates in this thread, it was a hard time for us, so thank you for your support and interest in our project)! After the official announcement, some media posted articles about our game, our design and what awaits our game in the future.

    Now that the announcement and DevGamm are over, we are fully immersed in the game development and are no more distracted by anything else. We have also increased our numbers: our team now has two more programmers and one more artist.


    By the way, a little more about artists. Today we would like to tell you how do we work on the graphics component of our project.


    The lead project artist guides the whole style of the game. All the arts depicting the world under The Dome, military uniform, weapons, items, everything goes through him first and then undergoes some enhancements, sometimes significant.


    For instance, here is how the art of our new artist initially looked like.





    And here is how it looks after our lead artist’s enhancements.






    The landscapes under The Dome, however, are not our development priority. Currently, all the artists in our team work on the looks of C.R.O.N.U.S. Employees. You may have noticed that the Foundation has five departments (we call them “Wings”). The employees of each department, in turn, are divided into three Tiers: for instance, the Black Wing recruits wear a simple uniform and armed with a submachine gun, Tier 2 has armor and helmets, and Tier 3 is wearing fully motorized combat suits...


    Each model goes a long way from an idea to the implementation. From the desktop of our scriptwriter, it goes to the desk of our art-director and turns into a concept.


    This is the concept of Tier 1 Blue Wing engineer:





    Based on the concept, our 3D artist creates a character with a base, “quick” texture.





    After that model returns to our lead artist, who enhances the texture, striving to achieve the maximum match with his initial concept.





    After that, the model goes to our animation artist and comes to life for real.





    Engineer is ready to work to the good of the C.R.O.N.U.S. Foundation! Meanwhile, he enjoys his coffee-break.


    Maybe it looks quite simple from the outside, but the work on the models does not always go smoothly. Sometimes the idea causes controversy almost in a concept phase. Let’s take motorized armor as an example: initially, there were far more than six options!





    Now, these six options have turned into one, which is yet to undergo some long and serious enhancements.



    (For instance, the “wings” will be removed from the armor, the shape will become even sharper, and the helmet - more expressive).


    While the 3D artists are working on characters, the level designers are compiling locations, which we are attaching to the global map, created by our programmer.


    The levels are far from being ready and we are not going to show them yet. Here is an ambient sketch instead.

    CRONUS Employee I'd like any insight you could offer here if you don't mind.
    So like most Kickstarters you can get a copy of the game while backing it. I always see Steam or platform of your choice.

    I see GOG mentioned as a platform this game will be released on. Can a backer that earns a copy of the game ask for a GOG key? I don't know how GOG is with keys in general but I prefer it as my place to purchase and own games.
