50 cal rifle

First time out of the vault
I don't know if this a problem that can be solved with the standard FTE but I will ask anyway.

Currently the longest range weapon is the M2 50cal. In real life its accuracy is much shorter than its range. No way someone shooting an M2 will hit someone sitting at the max range of an accurized 7.62/.308 sniper rifle unless that M2 has been accurized by Carlos Hathcock. Hathcock has been dead for years.

Mutants outshooting an 7.62 sniper is lottery grade luck. Much less shooting from the hip. But the game does it with ease and comes at a point in the game where the player is really nurturing their snipers for the late game phases. So you must either reload constantly in the mutant phase of the game or lose/waste characters. I know it's just a game but the creators got their weapon science wrong.

I see 3 alternatives. Increase the range of the sniper rifle; shorten the range of the M2; create the Barrett rifle. I'd be happy with any of the options. Alas, I am no modder. I can use the FTE to tweak characters or add an item to a cell, but that's hitting my limits. If the FTE can do this then I need some instruction. If the FTE can't help then I have to beg for a mod. To be honest, the game is due for a weapons update in general. It sits at a 1970's weapon data level that is still somewhat inaccurate even for then. The creators used old ballistic weapon stats and read them poorly. But that's really beyond my ken. No way I could handle a hex editor.

Could I get some thoughts or advice, please?

I think there are nothing you can't handle here. With FTE you can modify all default weapons in any way you see fit without the need of a mod. You should head for that. In the editor, all range, damage, type of bullets can be changed in seconds.

You can create a new weapon too, but this is the least interesting solution for your problem I think, as you will then need to make a sprite for it, edit its description text and place it somewhere on a mission map or even update the quartermaster list and then use triggers to call that gun from the list, geeez this will be way easier if you just modify the default guns the way you need them.

Nevertheless, I recommand you check these two great mods : Redux and Equilibrium on Moddb.com. You'll have a lot to play with and I think you will be more satisfied than with the vanilla game.

A completely different question here. I'm trying to edit recruits but their files in the editor don't show their in-game name.

Is there a list somewhere that gives game name to their hm or hf files?

I'm only just looking for Jo but a list would be nice.

By memory im quite sure they are all stored with their description in core/locale/game/characters.txt. You can search for {Jo} with Ctrl+F you'll find it easily

Good memory! So if I just edit hf06 (which is Jo) then when I arrive after Brahminwood to Alpha base and go to the recruit master then Jo will be offered up modified? She was offered up when I played the game unedited. (I have since removed and reinstalled the game - no saves around) Or would it be easier/better just to use BOSEdit to edit everyone on a savegame after I recruit them?

Oh yeah, it will work. Recruitmaster list just include an index an a filename with its path, no other information concerning Jo or other recruits, so yes. Regarding text files, I think you can even reload a saved game and the changes will be there, I'll be surprised they store characters texts into the save files. Probably the same for portraits.

Thanks again.

Btw, someone on forum staff should make a point to go rescue all the FOT downloads at the archive site because you can't download a number of them without getting error codes. The work around for accessing that site is getting sloppy and the links in old pinned threads are breaking down.
