Am I missing something, or is combat really this awful?

Running around like a spaz, spamming VATS, with nary a shred of strategy involved.

Am I missing something? Does it get better?

How does this pass for "gameplay?"

I played Oblivion for like an hour and returned it. So, I don't even remember what combat was like.

    Holy crap, I think I've been Bethesda'd.

    I love the combat.

    Fallout 1+2 combat was a turn-based strategy-game.
    Fallout 3 combat is a first-person-shooter.

So, yeah, if you say "Fallout 3's combat is a terrible turn-based strategy-game!" then you are correct, it is not a good a turn-based strategy-game because it is a first-person shooter. ;)

I think it is absolutely AWSOME how they created one of the best stats-based FPS combat types. I've seen it attempted before, but it's usually very poor.

Both ways of combat annoy me on that game

    1. First Person Shooter
You can't hit anything! Many times I ran out of AP and was trying to shoot only to be getting mauled to death by a dog.

    2. VATS
Bethesda did a great job of making this incredibly buggy. I don't know about anyone else but were you hitting other things which were say on the floor?

Wait, you think this game is good as an FPS?
    That's erm, weird.

Also, no, the combat doesn't get better.

Yeah I'm liking the combat, it's a bit tricky, and a bit tactical .

ie hit a super mutant from range with the hunting rifle while sneaking to get max damage. Shoot a couple more times with VATS long range, hope to hit and take cover. While covered switch to the combat shotgun and wait for the mutant to close in a bit, jump out and hit VATS, aim for the head take 2 shots if you have enough AP, if only one shot you may not kill him, switch to your ripper(chainsaw) and finish him in a gory blood spattering ending.

Er....*or* you just shoot him three times in the head with a hunting rifle.

Yeah, so true. I was like "WTF??!" when headshots did basically nothing.

Tactical? No sh*t. I took out whole Vault 101 and most of megaton by running around swinging a baseball bat. I love FO3 not?

As long as they are killable and don't just 'pass out' only to get back up as if you didn't just try to bash their brains in, then it's ok.

Of course it doesn't do anything. It's not an FPS. It's an RPG. Stats do matter real-time or not. Are you talking about the model not flinching or not killing the NPC?

And you do have to use some kind of strategy. If you go out there guns-a-blazing you'll die quick. Because it's not turn-based, yes, it is a different type of strategy.

Strange. First there are complaints that FO3 was like an FPS. Now there are complaints because people see that stats do matter in this game and they can't hit shit with VATS. No fucking duh. When you start out FO 1/2 you can't hit shit because you have a really low Small Guns skill.

There are definitely problems with this game as I have mentioned in another thread but it's a decent game. Like I said in the op-ed from PAX, this game IS NOT Fallout 3 but is an enjoyable game in its own right.

I hit pretty often. Even if I only have 30% or less chance for a hit.

I don't know what do you normally play for FPS but I'm playing plenty of FPS games and specially multiplayer and squad based ones. This is one of the worst FPS experience ever. It's utterly rubbish.

I WISH it was an RPG. Stats don't affect hit chance? How's that RPGish?

Umm, for the headshot thing, if you remember the original Fallout, critical hits in vital areas (groin, head, eyes) had a decent chance of 1-shot kill. If you shot the hand, two-handed wpns could not be used, etc. This is so very GONE in FO3.

The combat is dull, unsatisfying and limbs fall off very easily.

FPS is boring and very unpolished.

VATS works fine but the slow motion gets to you after a while and the strategy is non existent.

I'm not comparing FO3 combat to the original FO combat.

As far as FPS action goes, Wolfenstein 3D had tighter gameplay. The Fo3 combat insults my intelligence. Rubbish is a good word to describe it.

...What? Stats DO affect hit chance. It's not a true FPS. Now, obviously if you're aiming at the sun you're going hit nothing but air. But if you have your crosshair on or near the enemy, it's affected by stats.

I have yet to see a an autokill for headshots but I shot a super mutant in the arm and he dropped his gun and moved towards me. The only thing I'm disappointed with combat is I've crippled legs and the buggers still move.

About the video, it's probably because that's a tough npc, and he used the weakest gun on it, plus the weapon was severely damaged (a message appeared when he equipped it) so that's going to have an impact on your damage. Still, unless he was using bullets made of styrofoam, that guy should have died a long time ago.

Moral of the story: don't shoot your enemies with guns that shouldn't even be working.
