Arkansas is eminently enslavable. Or killable. Or ignorable. Mostly, though, he's just an annoying fart who likes to blow up cars while you're right next to them.
Yeah, he successfully pulled that trick on me during my first game.
I almost feel as though he should have been available as a follower...imagine having sniper cover from a mile away. Sweet.
I agree. Normally, I slip into the role of diplo-sniper in FO. Nevertheless, if another NPC filled that slot I'd happily play a different char.
In FOO, I usually select Charon as a team mate till Fawkes joins up upon leaving Raven Rock. Still, It'd be nice to have a FO2 Vick-type in tow to snipe/occupy Wasteland adversaries, allowing me a comfortable flank to personally acquaint them with my combat shotgun.
A Vic-type party member would be great for FOO. Not only to cover the flank, but for his repair skill. It's too damned expensive paying others to repair your weapons, and it's annoying being forced to increase your repair skill when the level cap is at 20.
This could be avoided by removing the deteriorating weapons anyway. What kind of SMG breaks after firing 100 rounds anyway? This game annoys me...
Personally, I avoid using followers as much as possible. I used Fawkes to clear the Deathclaw Sanctuary, and that as about i.
I don't like the degrading weapons feature either, so I've now installed the No Repair Needed mod off the Fallout 3 Nexus website.
Oh, btw, I recommend maxing out INT to 9 before exiting the Vault and making a run to Rivet City for the INT+1 Bobble Head in the Science Lab immediately afterwards. It's a suicide run but, INT 10 at level 2 - combined with the 'Skilled' perk in Level 4 - will give you a total of 137 additional skill points to distribute during normal gameplay, allowing you to max both Heavy AND Energy Weapons. No need to worry about which end-game weapon route to take when they're both at 100%. Simply awesome.
There's a video on YouTube demonstrating the optimal route. It's not as simple as it looks, but I managed to pull it off after a few attempts.
Jericho can use sniper rifle...but he works on script with range of assult rifle...
Also snipers like those in f3 are scipted they shot in cars and thats about it when he try to aim at you you shot him in the face becouse moron shoted at cars...
After a while, Arkansas actually came down from his perch to track me at ground level. We continuously sniped each other at long range before I finally managed to take him out with my hunting rifle behind one of the houses.
I never had any problems with Arkansas, I entered the town over the hill.
Yeah, that's the route I now take after discovering his hideout during my second game.
I didn't realize there was a hill into town after I had already killed him. Imagine my surprise when I was walking up the main road of minefield, picking up mines, and all of a sudden I get shot in the arm.
I would have to say Arkansas was the best battle of the game. I think I brought him down with a Chinese Assault Rifle, after storming his base.
I accidentally found him 1st time and simply because he shot at me I proceeded to walk toward him slowly while firing, taking hits all the time. Mostly ignoring the damage / stim-packing as I went. from range I fired my rifle as I closed I switched to laser pistol. The whole thing passed without event. This supposed ace sniper allowed me 'the target' to close over open ground for about 200 yards (and while I disarmed several mines...) before being VATs'd in the head at close range.
And I still have no real clue as to whom he is, what he does, why he's there, my other char took him slave, still none the wiser.
This is part of the problem with the game. As for the sniper, utterly lacking in backstory and reason to exist, like so many other characters.
Indeed, he's not a hard kill..
If you're having concerns about skill balance or weapon balance, I recommend trying out the F3C. http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=794
As for that old fart sniper, I find him easiest to kill from behind a rock in the distance, with -any- gun, even a 10mm pistol. Just don't let him hit you.
Here's what Prima's FO3 Game Guide says about Arkansas:
Did Prima guys just invent this on their own or what?
Beats me. Since Prima calls it the "Official Game Guide", I assume they received the info from Bethesda.
