When I played Skyrim for the first time... I remember thinking "What will Bethesda do to Fallout 4!?" and facepalm...
I had hope that I was just being a grumpy pessimist like I usually am... But then rumors of voiced protagonist, dialogue wheel, build your settlement, etc. appeared and I knew Fallout was over for me... I only own Fallout 4 because a friend gave it to me as a christmas present.

When I saw the Dialogue Wheel.

Yeah, that's pretty much the moment Fallout 4 disappointed me.

I mean for me it was when I pretty much discovered most of the map and thought where are the settlements where are the NPCs and quests ? Was I really disapointed. I got to the covenant and it was like cool and actual settlement but then there was like nothing else. I was kinda like where the pther settlements etc. Then yeah that when i knew. Also the other thing was when I found Kellogg. I just thought nan this is BS and shit the game down.

Fallout 4 is the only fallout game I've never finished the main story for

I saw someone mention the ending and yeah, I was disappointed before and forced myself to the finish, but the ending was the thing that killed it for me. The game could have redeemed itself, but it didn't.

    Instead we get two endings.

A Fallout game where the only choice that mattered was whether we went with the Institute or not.
And this is why no one takes the RPG genre seriously anymore (well, until Witcher 3 smashed every record alive).

I think the Witcher 3 is the reason fallout 4 got such a negative reception on release, because the public had the experience of a real rpg with actual choices and consequences for your actions. Maybe the next elder scrolls will receive the same reception as fallout 4, the realization of many of the Bethesda fans, that Bethesda games are as large as an ocean but shallow as a puddle.

When they announced the voiced protagonist and the removal of skills. Also they basically acted like New Vegas never happened when anyone would bring it up.

It actually took me far longer than most of you. I hadn't even played the original Fallouts until about a year before Fallout 4's announcement. So at the time I only really remembered how much fun I had playing Fallouts (by that time I hadn't played Fallout 3 recent enough to actually compare it to new vegas or the first 2). By the time Fallout 4 came out I was too poor to actually get it, and am still too poor to get it. But I did look up reviews and sales so that I can have a sense of pride in how well it was doing. Then I found this site which basically changed my whole perspective. I had only visited this site before to grab Fallout FIXT and the Fallout 2 restoration project but then I actually read the forums. It opened my eyes to things I would have never noticed before, the inconsistencies in lore being one of the main things for me. Then I looked at Fallout 4 with much less optimism, and much more criticism. I now use the common opinion that it is not a good fallout, but may be a good game. I have no idea, all I know is that it has quite a few things that make me angry.

There is often more than one way to judge something, and that is one of the discussions I had with a friend of mine who only started playing Fallout from 3, and has to this day never touched 1 and 2
Fallout 3 was a totally decent "adventure shooter with RPG elements", it had cool aesthetics, and if we pretend FO1 and 2 never existed, it had a pretty cool lore. In itself it was not a bad game.
Fallout 4 is the same, in itself it lets you shoot monsters with cool guns, there's green giants who hate you, and junk-armor gangsters who hate everybody, and it is from that point of view mooost normal consumers judge Fallout 3 and 4 - the games were fun to play, had cool guns, and enemies were fun to shoot dead with the guns.

The problem is of course what you have seen on this forum, that these games *carry a legacy*, they are supposed to belong to a specific series of games, that were NOT like these games are now :D
How would people react if Sims 5 turned into a shooter? Or even better, if the next Fallout turned into a top-down role play game, like 1 and 2 were, how would todays fans react? They have allready expressed displeasure with the original games, there's plenty of such comments on the internet, "looks boring" "temple of trials is too difficult!!!"

Anyway, since I allready imagined FO3 would suck before it was out, I was absolutely sure FO4 would suck, and I know for an absolute fact FO5, 6 and 7 will suck. All of them. Hard.

Unless one of them is made by Obsidian...

First of all, that is some heart-warming optimism right there!
Secondly, not necesarily. Obsidian are people who can be over-milked like anybody else (imagine milking people), and it is a bitter reality that our fabled "van buren" would probably have irked many an old-timer (although not quite as much as Beth's 3 did) the way 2 did the 1-purists

As much as I put NV up there with games I really enjoy, I didn't agree with *everything* they did. Why they decided to keep the "mirelurk kings" for example, is beyond me. Humanoid crab-people were a stupid bethestardism that I've no clue why Obsidian wanted in their game - especially choosing them *over* "mirelurks" which are at least just big, evil crabs.
They were also way too hand-holdy with their whole "hardcore" approach. It takes *effort* to die of thirst or hunger, you have to basically leave the game on, and go to work or something, come back in the evening, and your hunger-meter has simply bugged itself or something. It kept resetting itself for me, so much for hardcoreness :D
This is nitpickery of course, cus I'm a nitpick

IIRC in FNV Lakelurks are mutated from snapping turtles and not crabs (which makes more sense since I don't think the mojave has fresh water crabs).
I think they went with the Lakelurks just to have water enemies, so since they got so little time it allowed them to not spend time making new enemy models that would be used for just a few areas of the game.

Yeah, I get it and all, I just have an aversion for nonsensical humanoid critters :D Was it 1 or 2 that was gonna have these talking, humanoid racoons in it? That would also have illustrated my point, in that even our favorite devs can be very fallible!
Not to mention talking deathclaws, I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one going "nooo... " the first time that was encountered

In the end, I appreciate this kind of fallibleness. It brings our idols (if you will) down to ground level. I always liked finding small errors or inadequacies in my favorite artistic works, because it gives me a comfort to know that as much as I admire them, they are "just like me", they have to watch themselves and be careful when creating stuff

Honestly when I first played Fallout 2 I didn't care, but now that I'm older and able to appreciate Fallout's core themes better I think talking Deathclaws are somewhat cringy and daft.

When they announced that the protagonist would have a voice, be an heterosexual with a spouse and a kid, a suburban house and a robot butler (sure man, tell me it is still my character...), that there will be only 4 dialog options, that they kick out Ron Perlmann, that they will implement the gimmick of the robot telling you your name, that they would remove the skills, and traits, and true perks, that they spent so much time caring about the importants things like building houses out of nowhere, that they will bring back Dogmeat and have all companions be fucking invincible, when Howard guy with the childish voice was happy to tell us that the game worked, while he had no idea about how to make it work himself (he was struggling with the gamepad), everything happening in early press conferences, closely followed by the Twittergate where Pete Hines admitted he didn't care about consistency or logic.

I thought Falllout 3 was the worse thing they could do...

    When I met Preston Garvey.
I mean, escaping Vault 111 was pretty shit and uneventful, but I still had some hope.

The moment I met that fucking cowboy cosplayer and didn't have a chance to side with the raiders I knew something was off. That's when I realised it was going to disappoint me, but I continued.

When I got to Diamond "City" that was the nail in the coffin. I only continued to get material for my review. Then I tried out some mods and the settlement system a month later. Played each DLC, and somehow the game has gotten worse.
