Changing the windows startup/shutdown images

PsychoSniper

So Old I'm Losing Radiation Signs
I used to have FO images replacing the defualt windows images on my old PC, and have decided that my laptop needs some as well.

Ok, I know that under XP theyre stored in .dll files. What Im looking for is anyone thats done this before, and any advice they can give.

I looked for qutie a bit, but just found programs that cost money to do that.

Well, that and I buged Corpse :-p

EDIT-that just tells you how to add precreated .exe's

I supose I should have clarified. How do you create the .exe's themselves.

IIRC, they are just a couple of bitmap files buried in the windows directory. All you have to do is figure out where they are and replace and rename them.

Edit: Make sure you have "view hidden files" enabled, then go to c:\windows. Check out winnt.bmp and winnt256.bmp. Look familiar? I don't think you should replace them with larger images, but if you replace them with a different image I'm willing to bet that they will show up at boot instead of the XP logo.

I know thats that what they were Montez, I just was under the impression that in XP they were handled differntly.

Ill go check out what you said

For all your windows needs there is a place called http://www.annoyances.org/ where they tell you how to handle all the little problems that crop up in windows. I believe they have a section for that; I think it's in the "Windows XP style" rather than the section on "Startup/shutdown screens" under the "Customizing" heading.

I used to have a boot screen (XP, of course) that was incredibly 'falloutty". It had a trio of toxic waste buckets and a rusted metal floor. Can't seem to find it anymore. Does anyone here have it? (or another falloutty image could suffice)
