Crashing Fallout I - Cathedral level 3

Okay I just tried that... but it didnt work either.

Is there a way someone could post the files for a WORKING cathedral lvl 3 .map or .sav? I would really appreciate it!

I imagine this is the same as this topic

Merging, then.

Replacing maps that way would solve nothing, but crash your game, IMO - you'd best load a "good" save game, then go to /data/maps and copy the uncompessed files from there to a temp folder

Then load the current save and replace the uncompressed maps

Unless the problem is iwth the map you're on, in which case you're screwed.

It'd be best if you had a save to revert to.

I have the same problem and I would just like people to know that I have fixed it.

It has nothing to do with Dr. Whatever and it is not the too many items glitch, as I have tested.

I don't know what causes the error, but I was able to fix it thanks to the post made by Scampi. When mine crashed, all I saw was a black screen and that there was an application error on falloutw.exe, but I couldn't get it drawn. I took the address on Scampi's post and did a little debugging. I didn't try to read what the address does, but I found a little jump over it so I reassembled it so that it hops over the call and I now have level 3!

Hope that helps.

Lemmin, can you throw the rest of us a bone? The block of code 0x47F0A8 lives in is executed every time a save game is loaded. Please, please help the rest of us and do one of the following:

1. Upload your hacked copy of falloutw.exe. I will gladly host it if that is an issue.

2. Explain where you added the jump statement and the address you are now jumping to.

I wasted all day trying to get down in that room of the basement :(

Hi, what post made by Scampi did fix this problem? I scrolled all the way up to the first post and down and saw no post from Scampi about an adress. Weird! I want level 3 aswell =( I've read any piece of information how to solve it, but people just link to older posts that does not help or link to information how to install FO properly, which of course I've done with no result. So this post gave me hope again, but the link from Scampi is nowhere to be found... =( I understand why people repost old questions since 80% of the answers made does not help nor tries to help, but just keep refering back to older and older posts about the same problem. I've been trying to extract information about this problem but it is hard when maybe 2-3 posts on each page actually does refer to the actual problem, or replying to posts that is gone or edited. I am tempted to do a new post about this problem but I know what will happen so I just post it here. The problem is then that probably not many will see this post since I am actually replying to a post over 2 years old! But rules are rules. It is not DWWIN problem or installation problem, it is something else... But what?

Sincerely /Agrippa

Are we allowed to ask for save files? I'd be happy with one that takes place right before the ending. I don't think this mystery will ever be solved.

Or maybe if someone that is able to access the third level could upload the map file for it. That might work too.

ADDENDUM: A gracious soul at GameFAQs went through the trouble of killing master with my save file and then popping back up and saving at a point where I could continue and watch the ending. I know it's not ideal, but if anyone's stuck they can use this file to finish the game. My ending will probably be different, but it should be better than nothing. All you have to do is run out of the cathedral before it explodes.

This problem hit me last night aswell and I desperately searched this forum for an answer and tried everything but the most simple solution. I installed Fallout (Large installation) again and used the 1.2 patch (since I also used the 1.2 patch in the first installation) and copied my saves from the first installation to this one and the third level now works. That was all I did. I couldn't be more happy.:D Anyway I guess that most of you who faced this same problem, probably already tried reinstalling the game, but.. I'm still posting this, what the hell. Good luck!

Otherwise I have Win XP, Radeon 9600, 512mb RAM, Pentium 4 2800MHz.

Lemmin was referring to the screenshot of the error message that Scampi posted. The screenshot displayed a memory address.

Which updates/mods are you using with this?

Why are you asking this in a month-old thread that is dead, and about a problem he already solved?
Especially since you can assume he has no mods or unofficial patches installed, since he shouldn't be posting in this forum if he did.

I've had a bug where this happens:

1. kill master and watch death sequence

2. Escape the cathedral before bomb blows

3. watch cool nuke movie

4. I get a picture on the screen of the cathedral vault's control room, but it's all blacked out and all I can see are the computer monitors and flashing lights.

This ONLY happens when I do the MB and Cathedral quests in order.

Here is how my crash problem solved!!!

I had Fallout US 1.0, and I patched with official patch and the TeamX patches and at the end of my game when I tried to go to 3rd floor of the Cathedral via the elevator or by talking to Morpheus, it always crashed. I tried all proposed methods for the problem but with no result. Even if I started a new clean game with only the official patch and go directly to the Cathedral 3rd floor the crash occured..

I finally found a Fallout US 1.1 CD with the official patch embedded (which probably had been published by Interplay some years later because after the install of Fallout, it played a promotional video of Planescape Torment) and the problems solved! I tried my saves from Cathedral and no crashes! I tried a new game with or without TeamX patches, and go to Cathedral directly and no crashes!

Well that's my piece of knowledge.

First of all, hi everyone.

Second, I'm bumping this old thread because I'm having the "Crash at the Cathedral" -problem as well. Simply put, whenever I talk Morpheus into taking me to Master, or when I try to go to the 3rd floor via elevator, the game crashes and I get an application error (I can't see what it says though because the screen is black).

I've tried several of the tips provided in this thread; none of them worked.

I can't figure out the ".map"-thing; how am I supposed to extract it from the master.dat -file (and then rename it as .sav)?? Isn't the dat-file nothing but text?

However, the actual reason for posting: I was wondering if anyone had a fully functional MSTRLR12.SAV in their folders (I believe that's the one causing the problem), and could upload it somewhere? I really want to finish my game. I don't want to install a DOS-version because I don't have access to it. Trust me, I don't. I just want the .sav or, a REALLY detailed step - by -step -guide on what to edit and what to do to get to the Master. Thanks in advance.

Oh, and I'm running the official patched US version on a Win XP SP1.

The dat file is a packed file with a nonstandard format. In the files section under "Dat/Undat Utils" you will find several unpackers. I use DatExplorer which has a pretty simple graphic interface.

well, I'm having this problem, and I've tried everything suggested here (reinstalling the way suggested here, dropping all my items in the desert, using compatibility mode), but nothing works.

oh well, I can't finish the game, so I've watched the ending thru youtube :). its weird that there is no guide to solve this problem though, I've googled it too, and nothing came up.

Solution

I just managed to play through both Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 after failing due to same problems people have been writing about in this forum. Nothing here helped, so here is what I discovered about Fallout 1 by trial and error:

- Install both patches 1.2 and 1.3
- In vats don't tweak the computer of the level 1 and try to shut down force fields. This will corrupt all the saves and make the game crash before you will be able to exit vats.
- Make sure to enter the cathedral alone without npcs and with minimum amount of stuff. It worked for me with under 10 items in my inventory.
- It is likely to crash in cathedral if you face master and try to kill him, so make sure you save before you face master. Those saves in the middle of the fight are likely to crash all the time if you try to continue from them.

The bugs in Fallout 2 were not critical and I managed to play it thru even without any patches. NPCs were cripples, refused to talk, but there was always some workaround available.

Hope the Fallout 3 will not be a dinosaur like all the games nowadays seem to be. My budget computer just can't take them any more.

Happy hacking,

s
