A man comes walking out of the desert... carrying potatoes! And a gun! And potatoes! Such is the plot of Desert Story, a short Fallout-inspired film by Phil and Tim Pape:<blockquote>A post-apocalyptic dark comedy about a man trying to get some hookers. Part of a series entitled "Nuclear Coleslaw."</blockquote>

If you watch it, that will be roughly 6:23 you will not spend doing something else.

    Fallout thematic relevance!

The cold comfort of continuity in choices and consequences.

No "kind" deed will go unpunished.

"They 're still people" the hollywood bullshit, and then he kills a woman...yeah, realy persuasive there

Other than that, the directing and acting is much more professional than the other one we saw here (can't recall its name)

Too bad that the main character takes his role so seriously because it's too cliché..

Yeah, slightly cringeworthy posturing on his behalf, but other than that, some nice work.

    Also: bluegrass closing credits wooo!

Man, this is great. Want to see a full length movie in that kind of style.. Also, that girl in glasses is very cute, a shame she receives a bullet in the face. :( :D

Don't particularly love the acting, the writing is ramshod.

    Love the atmosphere, really well-made.

didn't find it funny at all, but I liked the atmosphere too, it was amazing. As amazing as the girls. The blond with the green cap made me happy for wasting this 6:30 minutes of my life. The other is really really fine too :P

(the destroyed car which the couple stood in front was REALLY Fallout-y. Amazing)

Great atmosphere and attention to detail, in form of dirt-makeup, the guy's clothing, and the camera shot of the doll swinging on the ceiling...

The "lived-in" props are priceless, as they go a long way to lend the scene visual authenticity. The video color filtering is right-on, too.

Once this director is done playing games and gets serious, he's going to go far.

If this had better acting, a better story, and was serious, this would make an epic Showtime series.

Like the others said, the atmosphere is pretty damn good, almost spot on Fallout like. But the writing and some of the acting was not good. And I think everyone should be a lot more dirty looking, that couple that got shot, their clothes look like they just got picked up from the laundromat.

And, going back to the couple getting shot, why does the main character all of the sudden have morals, I mean, he just bought time with hookers, what did he expect indeed. The story is just not very believable, not all that great.

With better writers, and with this short's production values, this could make for a great little web series.

I know the style in which it was done. I wouldnt say it was bad acting exactly. The hero could have had better direction. ALl in all, anything grimy, violent, unwholesome plus those two girls, all bowing to Fallout, you can't possibly go wrong. ever....

I think the acting was pretty ok for that script. Few actors would have done better.

the girls, ah, the girls... Awesome choice of actresses, I have to repeat.

I liked it. Better than nearly all post-apoc amateur stuff out there, since the setting is decently worked out, props are decent and the atmosphere is good.

Obviously both acting and writing can be improved, and the props should be more worn (like the shotgun was too nice), but that's ok.

Watching movies like "A boy and his dog" would be greatly beneficial to the people involved if they haven't seen it already. Your main char doesn't need to be a hero to be worth following around. Don Johnson's character was a fucking rapist for fucks sake...
After finding the woman dead after being slashed up:
Vic: We coulda used her three more times!
    Blood: Ah, war is hell.

But back to the vid: I liked the fact it wasn't a happy hollywood ending, but if you have the girls being ungrateful bitches, you could've let them shoot the guy. It's his own fault for leaving the shotgun lying around after killing the pimp. :)

Why not? He bought time with hookers, not with slaves...
Just because you've got a pimp doesn't mean you're enslaved.

If you're however chained to the wall... Well... Maybe that's a step too far for the main character.

I wouldn't say that's unrealistic. I've got no issue with pimps or whores, but slavers are not on my "ok" list. Slavers would be people I wouldn't mind killing and looting their possessions tbfh.

Yeah it could use a tad better writing, but it's good. Very.

Well, I hold pimps and slavers in the same category of disgust. Pimps are basically slavers, there may not be physical chains around their hookers, but the chains are still there. Hookers can't just up and leave without consequence, just like a slave. Hookers may be paid, but they are still basically slaves in my book.

I just found it odd that here this man is looking for prostitutes, in a post apocalyptic world mind you, and he all of the sudden gets bit by the morality bug when he sees the condition in which these people are being kept. Alright, fine, I'll buy it, but still there could have been a lot better story line than this.

Presuming this is episode #1, perhaps some back story will emote the shooter's motivation?

This collision of characters may be working as an attention getter,

from all the present texts that are projecting each viewers' moral / emotional justifications.

The HUH? 'n' WAH? may or may not be resolved in the mystery of HIS-story!
