Thank uncle Joseph for that. Forced colonization, deportations, etc. Siberia was a pretty much desertic place until the trans-siberian was built. The only means of transportation to mining towns such as Novosibirsk, too.

The straight, spiderweb patterns those town form, viewed from space at night are nice, though.
