Troika Games, one of our favorite developers, was profiled at FileFront today in a feature they call "F! True Company Story". The article is fairly short but does contain some photos of Troika's developers and office, as well as this cliffhanger ending:

But then again, this is a good thing. While managing their growth appears to be a constant problem, it means the company is doing what every software company out there strives to do: succeeding. Their most current release, Vampire: The Masquerade—Bloodlines has largely received great reviews from critics, and it seems there is a positive, hopeful future in store for Troika.

“I hope Troika Games continues to make quality role-playing games, possibly expanding to three teams,” Cain said.

But most ambitious, he also mentioned venturing into a heavily trodden path, changing it for the better. In short, creating a “true-role playing” MMORPG.

    MMORPG's!? Say it ain't so!

    ye of lil' faith...

i think it's a weird place to go, but i have full confidence in Troika. it's about the only game company that i trust to churn out an enjoyable game no matter what.

still, i'd prefer they'd focus on a fallouty game right about now :)

Nice article. Yet again this shows why I think that Troika would be one of the best companies to work at as a game developer.

As for the MMORPG thing: if anyone can pull it off, it's Troika. What I think they'll do is create a MMORPG which relies heavily on character NPCs, probably a reasonably small environment (once city or so), populated with NPCs with character, providing atmosphere and more direction than your usual MMORPG.
That's what I think is one of the few ways to provide a decent role-playing environment in a MMORPG, and with my eyes on the past Troika games, that's probably what they would do.

    Nice article!

Yeah, if anyone can make a MMORPG that's about RP and not just mindless leveling, it's Troika. Although I would prefer if they keep making great SP RPG's. I can't wait for the PA game, I hope they get a good contract.

Like SuAside, I too have full confidence in Troika. If they have the resources and time, they will make whatever they do great.

I hope they make the MMORPG after the PA RPG.

I'm starting to get a little afraid Troika might have bought into the whole MMORPG = $$$ & CONSOLES = $$$ & RT = $$$ trend. They used to be a dev house that made the games like it should be... Remember Timmy and Leon, bending over too much will eventually end up with you being the internet whores ala IPLY..

I somewhat agree with you Odin, but still, we need to sit back and wait and see, since this is still up in the wind.

PS: The F! True company stroy is a rather cheap knockoff of a TV show in the states that my mom likes a little too much.

Its on a TV station called E! which focuses on the entertainment industry, and they had (never choose to watched it, dont know if its still on air) called E! True holloywood story that seemed to focus on 'tragic' storys from holloywood like 'stars' ODing and such.

ow come on guys, at least give em the benefit of the doubt... when has Troika really let you down before? what up til now has given you the impression that they were simple moneyhounds?

yes, all the games they made up til now had their flaws, but at the same time they were gems within their genre...

Odin, imo it is a good possibility that the boys at troika are pissed off about the current state of most MMORPGs & they want to change that. i know that as an oldskool fallout fan it's hard to show optimism but don't break everything down before it is even confirmed. Troika hasn't even announced it yet...

as said, they have 2 separate production teams. so basically they can make both. it is a fair bet that they are already working hard on the PA RPG. now there is even talk of a third production unit. maybe that's one that will be dedicated to the MMORPG? who knows?

i myself am not too fond of the MMORPG scene myself, but i will play World of Warcraft. let us see what Troika has to say about all this before we judge anyone...

I'm only pointing out that I see a well known trend from the things they say, going from rebel to corporate whore isn't farfetched..

First the Pa rpg probably being Real time, now this... i don't know, maybe game companies need to follow a strict path during their lifetimes, but i've seen this picture quite a few times, and i don't like where thing usually head from here...

Heard rumors of their MMO. It does indeed sound sweet, but NDA's are basically in effect.

Uhm, I think it was Leon who said they would prefer making it with TB combat, but since no publishers would be interested in the game, and since it was hard getting anyone to publish a PA game, it would be real time with pause. We should blame the publishers and the people that only buys mainstream shit for this. Plus, I think that Troika can do RT with pause really well if they put their souls into it.

And about the MMORPG, Tim said he wanted to change the genre. As SuAside says, they're probably tired of the shitty quality and shallowness of todays MMORPGs and would want to change it. Nothing wrong with that. As long as they make great games, I don't mind them getting lots of money for it. But believe me. If they start to release semi-RPGs for XBox, I'll be all with you.

My main problem with it is that no matter how much Troika might be able to improve on the level treadmill and phat loot part of MMORPG's, or improve NPC's, dialogues and quests, the greater part of any experience is going to be interacting with the other people playing it - they have no control over that, and I can't see it ending up being any different than the same kind of retardedness that goes on in other online games. I'd really rather see them do a regular RPG with an option for multi-player.

Beside that, I have no interest in paying monthly fees over and above a game's price. It just seems ridiculous when I can play UT2004, Half Life 1 & 2 mods, or even (god forbid) Neverwinter Nights online for free. Even a Troika mmorpg isn't going to change my mind on that one.

You're probably right Montez. The retardedness of the majority of the people often gets in the way of things.

If Troika makes a MMORPG it will be the biggest flop a MMO titles has ever seen. Seriously, at this point Troika can't even create a polished single player game. A MMORPG is 100X more ambitious.

I don't think any company can make MMORPGs worth playing, IMO.

"true RP" MMORPG? Am I the only one who understands enough about game design to know that such a thing is not possible?

As Montez pointed out, you can't control the players and that's where most interaction in MMORPGs comes from.

The only way to make an MMORPG with role-playing is not to make it an MMORPG in the first place but an ORPG, which would mean that player interaction is limited and the game is story heavy (which contradicts with the open-endedness of online games unless you figure out how to give the individual players a feeling of progress without defining a true end and without having the world change too fast for irregular players (which is a common problem in MMORPGs)).
But then the question is why you should make it an online game and not just a normal RPG.

Ah, but theres an unless there Ashmo, and Troika is one of the few companys that might figure that out. Not saying they will, just saying noone else is as likley too.
