Fallout 2 highlights containers and corpses

First time out of the vault
Hi.
I was hoping that some people here might have experience with editing the .ini files of Sfall versions. Not long ago, I had a Sfall version which made containers and corpses in blue before I checked them, yellow if I left items in them, or grey if I picked up all the items in them, from every distance in the area. Unfortunately, I made a fresh installation lately, and now when I'm using Sfall 1.8, I can see the containers and corpses highlighted in blue, yellow, and grey, but only when I'm very close to them. On the other hand, when I'm using Sfall 4.4.7, I can see containers and corpses from every distance, but they are highlighted only in white. Can somebody tell me, please, how I can edit those files (as much as I know ddraw.ini and sfall-mods.ini) in order to play as I used to?

I think that on Sfall 1.8, those are the lines that highlight the containers and corpses with blue, yellow, and grey, but only from a short distance:

;A key (LShift) to press to toggle the highlighting of all items on the ground on the current map
ToggleItemHighlightsKey=42
;Also highlight containers and dead critters (untouched color, valid range: 3..228, but 4,8,16,32 reserved)
TurnHighlightContainers=106

I wonder why it's not showing in later versions of Sfall, and if there's a way to make it visible from a long distance.

Heh.. sorry there mate for such a long delay.. i Haven't forgotten about you, yed i've stumbled on a laptop software problem, tht i had to deal with before going into internet..

anyways.. as for your question the sfall 1.8 known as "by Crafty" is a separate branch of sfall it has built in color theme for highlight mod, those can't be changed. similarily the official sfall branch 4.4.7
You can install and configure fo2tweaks, and in addition disable the highlight mod in sfall 4.4.7
to do that you need to first find a file called sfall-mods.ini ( make sure to enable view of known file extensions in folder options in windows)

in sfall-mods-ini disable all highlight related options by removin what's after "=" in each option regarding highlighting.
next enable fo2tweaks ( copy it to "mods" folder within the game folder) next put fo2tweaks.ini to where your ddraw.ini directs config files ( look for config files folder in ddraw.ini) after fo2tweaks.ini is set in place correctly open it up and do detailed inspection of it from top to bottom, and you'll definetly find the lines responsible for color changes, there are few options to pick from regarding colors for everything, so you can set up everything exactly like in crafty's sfall)

as for your alst question sfall 1.8 by Crafty is not an earlier version of 4.4.7 but something similar made by totally diferent person in that person's own unique way. sfall 1.8 and sfall 4.4.7 are also not compatible with each other it's lke both are cars but one is a fiat and other is a volkswagen, don't expect fiat parts to work inside a volkswagen :p

That's ok, thank you very much for answering. I tried to do what you suggested, but it didn't work for me for some reason. I downloaded fo2tweaks_v12.22, which included the file ddraw.dll and the folder with fo2tweaks.ini and fo2tweaks.dat, and because it wasn't clear to me, I overwrote ddraw.dll in the main folder and copied the two fo2tweaks files to both the main folder and the mods folder. It was also written on the fo2tweaks:

; expanded highlighting mod. Disable default sfall highlighting is you're using this (Key=0 in sfall-mods.ini).
highlighting=1

So I wasn't sure if on the sfall-mods.ini, I should leave every = sign with 0 to the right of it or leave every = sign without a number to the right at all.
And I didn't know if to open a new thread for it, but in the old sfall settings, I was able to see the free weight on the character, his companions, and on containers. Unfortunately, I didn't find something like this on fo2tweaks. Do you know how I can use this ability?
By the way, why is there a sfall-mods file if ddraw.dll already exists?

in sfall-mods only leave nothing after = sing but only after the highlightning mod related =
for example the defauld 42 is the shift key so leave it empty theres's also the LoS that only highlights stuff in close proximity to the player, there are other stuff related to highlihgt mod bu there are also other mods within sfall-mods like the party control etc. those you should probably configure to your liking..

as for fo2tweaks.ini as i said it needs to be placed where ddraw.ini has your config files folder set to, you need to look through ddraw.ini and find the correct location and place fo2tweaks.ini there..

as for fo2tweaks.ini look further down in it.. after the initial mod enablement there's a section where every sub mod is configurable including the fo2tweaks highlight mod, by simply tewaking the settings there you can change various highlight colors ( so you can set them like it was on crafty's sfall)

do not copy over the ddraw.dll from the fo2tweaks mod, chances are the sfall in your installation is newer than what comes bundled with fo2tweaks..

thad ddraw.dll is only there if your sfall is very old ( fo2tweaks comes with minimum required version of sfall (a.k.a ddraw.dll) not the latest one.

uhh.. i hope this finally clears things up.. i don't have time right now to tossle with you here anymore.. my old folks are out and i have the whole house sitting on my shoulders, including one physically ill and a mentally snowflake cat to take care of.. i'm literally sitting whole day preparing and applying medicine to it, on hourly basis for the whole week..
