"Now when I was a little chap I had a passion for maps. I would look for hours...and lose myself in all the glories of exploration. At that time there were many blank spaces on the earth... True, by this time it was not a blank space any more. It had got filled since my boyhood with rivers and lakes and names. It had ceased to be a blank space of delightful mystery – a white patch for a boy to dream gloriously over. It had become a place of ..."

For those of you with Google Earth, I just uploaded a .kmz file and a readme to NMA. Open them in GE and you can roam the preapocalyptic Earth with the Fallout maps filling your screen.

As noted in the readme, I will add an Excel spreadsheet soon (later this week I hope) that will allow you to easily generate your own version of the maps almost automatically.

    Enjoy. Debate. Flame. Flame-debate.

Edit: Available for download here. It's a Winrar file, though the extension is missing for some reason.

Have the current version of Google Earth installed:

Add the .rar extension to the file you download.

Extract the .kmz file from the .rar file.

You should be able to double-click the .kmz and have it open in Google Earth. You could also drag-and-drop the .kmz file into the Google Earth screen.

Screenshots are in the NMA Gallery:
    1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

Post again if you still have trouble. I've tried it from work, and had some friends try it, and all was well.

    Thanks Dweller.

@ Atomic Avatar: I'm working on a general update, and I should have FOT in there, at least a draft. The map generator .xls file I will include probably isn't much good for the FOT map...since the only way I can make Tactics work so far is by cutting and pasting bits of the game map in various spots. You can still flesh out your material through GE though.

I was wondering, how do you go about editing the location files you posted? I have been poking at them in google earth and and just do not seem to be seeing a way to adjust the locations. I have never used the aplication before. Is there a drag and drop mode for the place markers that I am missing?

I was thinking of reconciling some of the overlaps between the maps, as well as adding a few other locations.

I'll keep playing with it till I figure it out, but any tips are welcome.

To edit in GE, right click the object and select Properties. For placemarks, you can do that in the main screen. For lines, polygons, and overlays, you have to right-click the entry in the My Places list (also works for Placemarks though). With that you have access to the appearance, color, opacity, you can drag placemarks around, copy and paste, whatever.

Hint on manipulating the overlays: drop one into place and then slide the opacity setting up and down, to see how the FO maps drape onto the terrain. Turn the Terrain Exaggeration all the way up to 3, unless you like trying to "worm's eye" the camera position all the time.

The Location Circles are actually 16-sided polygons, so they can't be picked up and moved easily (only vertex-by-vertex; lines are the same way). This is the kind of thing you want the spreadsheet kml generator for. Soon, I promise (next weekend).

    Great stuff, thanks.

(By the way the file uploaded is without an extension, reupload maybe i dont know, not a biggie if you just add .rar though)

In the next day or so v2 of the Atlas should be up.

The FO 1 and 2 worldmaps now have transparency working correctly along the edges. I don't think there were any other changes to FO 1, 2, or VB.

For FO T I have just added the real-world locations mentioned in-game. The map...it's a problem. But I think I see how to attack it.

I got distracted with FO 3 mapping due to the E3 coverage and wanted to add that right away. I still need to refine the FO 3 map some, but the technique I use for that should be useful on the Tactics map.

For some discussion of the FO 3 map, be sure to see this thread.

Update: As of 29 July, Version 2-1 is here.
(smaller FO 1 and 2 map file sizes, added a Fallout Makers folder with Interplay and Bethesda's offices, and a bit of info on Redding).
