Gamasutra's press release confirms that New Vegas is doing well, actually, pretty damn well, considering that it's leading the digital sales for October 2010, with 308,000 units sold and snatched the record of fastest selling new title of the year too.

These numbers combined to the NPD numbers bring the PC sales to 415,000 units.

Bethesda sent out a press release to brag about its sales, as we already learned earlier.
We are pleased to announce that according to recently released NPD data for October, Fallout: New Vegas was recognized as the month’s best selling console title as well as the best-selling title for the PC. NPD reports that robust sales of Fallout: New Vegas made it the highest grossing title in October, measured by dollars, across all platforms.

“We recognize that there are many high-quality games that come out during this time of year,” said Vlatko Andonov. “We couldn’t be more pleased at how well the game has been received and we want to thank our fans for their overwhelming support of the game.”

Fallout: New Vegas, the follow-up to Fallout 3 – the 2008 Game of the Year – brings this beloved franchise to a location only Fallout could do justice: Vegas. Fallout: New Vegas takes all the action, humor and post-apocalyptic grime and grit of this legendary series, and raises the stakes.

Downloadable content that extends the New Vegas experience is due out for Xbox 360 on December 21, 2010. Dead Money will have you working alongside three other captured wastelanders to recover the legendary treasure of the Sierra Madre Casino. Your life hangs in the balance as you face new terrain, foes, and choices. It is up to you how you play your cards in the quest to survive.

Reviews of Fallout: New Vegas have called the game as “an utterly essential purchase” (MSN UK) and as “addictively, rambunctiously fun” (Entertainment Weekly). The Associated Press awarded it a 4 out of 4 stars and said “Bottom Line: It’s a Blast”, while GameSpy gave it 4.5 out of 5 stars and called Fallout: New Vegas “one of the best games of the year.”

Fallout®: New Vegas, developed at Obsidian Entertainment, has been rated M for Mature by the ESRB. For more information on Fallout: New Vegas, visit http://fallout.bethsoft.com.

Just a heads up, this FADE that gamasutra quoted is a cover site for vgchartz.org, which pulls their numbers out of their ass most of the time. so take it with a grain of salt.

Not really, see the Steam best seller chart, NV was at the top last time I checked.

Also Xbox360 sales alone clocked in at over 600k last week.

+ the PC sales theyv'e hit a million.

One can assume another 400k copies sold on the PS3 I imagine.

1.5m in a matter of weeks, goes to show people are still interested in real RPG's, please take note gaming industry!

Not very reliable considering that Steam doesn't give any specific numbers.

Hardly. New Vegas is a slam dunk and if you think it would have sold this much this fast without Fallout 3 you're crazy.

Nothing. There are no reliable trackers of game sales. Only publisher-provided numbers are trustworthy. Anything else is random guesstimates.

I'm glad it's doing good, now make it official, and give Obsidian the reigns to the franchise for good. Bethesda can't compete in the writing department...

I wouldn't use a single game as an indication of this happening, how well has Arcania IV sold?

That's great. Hopefully this encourages Bethesda to let Obsidian make some future Fallout games. Although probably the best we can hope for is Bethesda continuing to develop the engine and "numbered" games and allowing Obsidian to make "side" games using the same engine.

So in other words if Steam tells us that some game they sold over their platform is the best selling title on their platform isnt reliable ?

They mean that the numbers themselves aren't reliable.

I'll chime in and say that I, too, hope that Obsidian will be allowed to take over development - or at least continue to make more Fallout-games - while Bethesda sits back as the publisher, raking in the revenue instead. This franchise deserves quality writing, which means Bethesda should keep their distance.

On another note, I'm still fascinated by the uselessness of the 'Game of the Year' title companies are allowed to boast about. Sure, gaming sites and magazines name their chosen Game of the Year, but the way game companies slap it onto their titles, as if it was some kind of universally acknowledged definition that it was the best game of that year.... well, it's pretty lame, if you ask me, but what can you do? It's funny when there are more than one titles that have named themselves the Game of the Year of the same year.

New Vegas is selling this well because of Fallout 3. and it does so mostly thanks to reviewers and gamers calling it more of the same. not because it corrects a lot of FO3's mistakes. so I definitely wouldn't use it as some kind of proof that the masses are still interested in "real rpg's". rather, people seem to be complaining about how it's not more like FO3 and how there are too many role-playing elements this time around.

Funnily enough, I've seen lots of people say "how can you say that Fallout 3 is not good? It won THE Game of the Year award!" etc. So it is working.

Arcania? That game has as much of role-playing as my 5-year old nephew of macho attitude. You can't really compare that to FNV. That said, I tend to agree with Mr. Threepwood in general. Good cRPG can always be sold, especially now when they are so scarce (not in titles, but in quality).

Yeah, that doesn't surprise me. I don't know what frustrates me more; the fact that game companies are allowed to so blatantly lie (or at least deceive) like this, or the fact that people are often ignorant enough to buy into it.

I dunno why gaming blogs or magazines would want to pull these statistics out of their arses. What does it accomplish for them other than making the game look good?

It's not a lie if it's true. Pretty much all of them are indeed Games Of The Year according to at least one website. Doesn't mean they are universally accepted as the best games of that year, but if Randomgamingsite.com says you are their game of the year, you can put that shit on the box.

Well, yeah, in which case it's at least a very deceitful marketing ploy.
