Falltergeist - free software Fallout 2 game engine

Does it work? Can we play Fallout 2 in it?
Yes you can play the game (using original game data files of course).
Also you can run it on android.
You can see the video there: https://falltergeist.org/post/19

Awesome!
Does this mean that we can finally fix hardcoded bugs, change engine behavior etc?
If so then that is awesome!
Yes developers wants to port the game on other operating systems to fix bugs, improve graphics and make something for better game modding. I think it is possible to recreate project van buren

Don't think so. This is the feature list:

Movies - thanks to iSage
Fade in/out - thanks to iSage
Credits - thanks to iSage
Game settings can be saved now - thanks to iSage
WorldMap state - thanks to vvbalashoff
Opcode handlers are in separate files now - thanks to CynicRus
Pathfinding
Game time
Background music and interface sounds
Movements animations
Interaction with game objects (doors opening)

Nothing about combat, dialogue and all the other jazz that would still be missing.

It is an alpha version so not all things are working. So developers are welcome.

Dialogs are somewhat working (no talking heads, though). Combat, worldmap, npc ai are not. It's hard to early to call it even alpha.
Developers are welcome, as we are now on long break due to real life. (for example, someone, who can rewrite renderer in opengl+shaders, as i am too lazy)
Also, i think there was already falltergeist-dedicated thread.

I think that the engine will give a great possibilities in modding. For example it will be possible to recreate Project Van Buren or remake Fallout New Vegas as a Fallout 2 like game, or to make a completely game. Also it will be possible to improve graphics and run the game on other platforms.

yo man why do people apologize for not speaking proper english. guys is not relevant if your english is good or not. all that matters is people get what you're trying to say.

and yes i also second the idea of having better support for mods. if this engine could make mods easier to make maybe even creating a unified modding tool like fo3 geck type it then the community will grow and become more active because people will be producing new content faster and fallout 1/2 will become more fun to play again.
Developers says that the engine will support all Fallout 1 Fallout 2 mods by default and creating special mod tool is a one of their targets. (For example libfalltergeist let you work with original data files. https://github.com/falltergeist/libfalltergeist )
P.S You can contact with Alexeevdv (The main developer) to tell about your ideas: https://github.com/alexeevdv
Also there: https://falltergeist.org/contacts
P.P.S It is a very good that you can understand my english. :-)

This is a great project, but won't this get you mega-sued by Bethesda? Then again it could go like Scummv and OpenXCOM get by ok - you still need original assets so its win-win for all.

I'm always one up for transfering old classics to open-source engines.

You'll still need original assets, yes. Maybe we'll translate some of formats (like .lst, or AI config) into more readable/editable format, than again, we can just include some kind of installer (like ArxLibertatis did) and do this automagickally.

I think you should start to release binary files of the engine to make it easy to test, also you should write article about it (for example on http://habrahabr.ru) because this project is not so famous in internet, but people really needs it.

looking forward to this.

my only request is to make modding incredibly simple. and i am talking about game editing, scripting and changing pretty much anything about the game to be REALLY EASY.

It would be interesting to hear some feedback on this subject from experienced modders. I mean more specific, technical ideas.

As I understand, current priority is to do something playable, ASAP. But knowing some considerations early, might improve possible future modding without much effort from dev team.

I notice no developers ever touch the IRC -- is it abandoned? You might want to remove it from the README then.

Are there any plans to support Fallout 1?
How close to the original game are you planning on getting: exactly the same, or approximating some functions?

We mostly hang out on jabber conference.

Current idea is to make vanilla Fallout 2 fully playable at 1.0 and then move to Fallout 1 support (the same way as OpenXCom did, but I hope our job will be easier...).
Right now it's too early to say how "close" to original it might be, but the idea is to remake the engine, so it should be as close as possible. Minus bugs and outright exploits :)
