Guide updated

The "finished" version of the Nearly Ultimate Guide, swollen to some 550 kb, can now be found at:

http://user.tninet.se/~jyg699a/fallout2.html

It's not yet Perfect, but it was either now or in two months, and besides there has to be something remaining for a future update. I think most people wouldn't notice the things that are still unclear or incomplete.

While you're downloading large files anyway, why not go grab some of my music? (I wrote about this on the general forum first but I never got any reply, so I'm sneaking it in here. :)) Go to:

http://user.tninet.se/~wcw454p/download.html

You'll find some music files and information on how to play them. The two songs containing Fallout 2 samples are "A Day in the Wasteland" and "Earth Mother's Tears". You can listen to them while searching through the guide for the new stuff. :P

Hope you're having a good summer, unless you live on the southern hemisphere.

RE: Guide updated

Looks very good.

Was curious, would you like a link in the walkthroughs section with a local mirror for in case a server belch or something?

Yep, both of those would be nice. I've had some vague idea of asking a mod about this but forgot to do so.

RE: Guide updated

I'm already preparing a list of comments for your next revision :) I need to get through it again (I'm in the middle of Modoc as of now)... But man it's massive!

That and the "list"...

RE: Guide updated

Dear Per-

Your hard work in putting this altogether is much appreciated. However, would it be too much to ask if include a "What's new" section so that we would know what you have added to the file?

Not a complaint, just a suggestion.

Cheers,

Welsh

RE: Guide updated

The thing is so massive I doubt he could... the "what's new" section (at least this turnaround) would have made the file way too big :)

I have a small but growing list of things as well... in fact, several things concerning F1 that I've come across working on the follow-up F1 guide (who saw that coming? :P). Now I don't know if I should post those here (because it's about the F2 guide) or in the F1 forum (where I'll probably be posting some questions anyway, but it and the mod forum seem pretty dead at the moment).

As for the list of new things, it's a reasonable idea, of course, but on the other hand, it wouldn't look good. It's supposed to be a reference guide anyway, in the look-up-what-you-need-to-know sense and not the must-know-everything!!! sense. At least that's gonna be my excuse. :)

RE: Guide updated

Oh, my G#D! Per actually finished his lovely guide. So is it perfect yet?

*LOL*

Hi, long time no see Per. ;-) I am glad you are finially able to pull all these together. After a prel. analysis, it looks great, although I would've appreciated you clean up my wording or grammer a bit. You know my brain doesn't work well with all these typing. :D I would go through it like before and try to pick it full of holes as well, I hope you can take the stabs in stride. ;-)

Until next time then. :)

Nah, but now that I'm on a different computer I might be able to decompile the scripts, which I couldn't do on my own. I was able to decompile the F1 scripts, which has helped immensely with the work on that guide, so I think it should work with F2 as well.

Wah, I thought I did. If there's anything especially upsetting, just let me know. :)

RE: Guide updated

Yeah, if it works with FO1, it'll work with FO2.

BTW, ABel passed by and dropped a new update to the decompiler database, which adds a lot of FO1 stuff in it which you'll probably want to get.

And I discovered I could make changes to the DB myself, so I added a few codes of my own, if you want my version (reason I don't release it is I don't include the .ipp definitions).

RE: Guide updated

great guide, you really should put it on gamefaqs, it needs a big guide, no one's done it yet...

What does it mean when you say you won't add 'Karma values: more work than it's worth' to the guide?

if you did want the detailed weapon and armour stats, i have them, i started writing a guide for it, but never finished...

RE: Guide updated

Because there's a lot of things which affect the karma and it's not updated in the pipboy, making it annoying to keep track of.

as for GameFAQs, they require text files which would mean a big restrucutation process for him.

One little bug you forgot. Well we can't all be 100% all the time. :P

If you have sex with either Miria/Davin, there is a possibility that your computer can get stuck/frozen in that particular moment. When the screen goes black, it never comes back, but the music is still playing. I have heard this reported number of times, and experienced this myself. No idea what caused it, some say it's because there are too much item on you when you do it, and when you drop them all in one map, it crashes the game, but some others have claimed to have just "waited" out in 20mins real time.

OOps, for some reason, I forgot to mentioned this a long time ago. I have had the batteries in motion sensors, and geiger counters run out on me.

2. As for Marcus..., well, you do know that - even if someone can get their juices flowing(a very straight up biological function), you can still be sterile. I mean just ask 30-40% of North Americans..., :P.

There's the plain text thing, also someone mentioned Gamefaqs is evil, though I don't know anything about that. I tried using the "Save as text" option in Explorer to see if it could convert the lists and blockquotes correctly, but it just eats all the line breaks... not pretty.

As Red said, the effect on karma in the game is kinda fuzzy; all you really have to know is if you're at +500 or -500. (You wrote something similar in your Perks FAQ, if I recall correctly, under the Presence perk.) So giving detailed information in the guide about when you gain or lose specific karma points would clutter it up for no apparent gain. (Not to mention the _least_ troublesome way of finding these numbers would be to go through every script in the game... and that is troublesome enough!)

>if you did want the detailed

I'll be adding the basic AP cost to the weapons table since it's an important factor when picking and choosing weapons, but I think I'm stopping there. The stuff I'm not cluttering up the tables with are things like what's the DR mod for Tesla Armor against exploding damage? If anyone wants to know, it's in the game. :)

OK. It hasn't really been my ambition to include all known bugs, but since there already is a bug note for Miria/Davin, might as well slip this in.

How do you run out of Motion Sensor batteries? Conjure up the automap, turn on the scanner and leave the room? :) With the Geiger Counter you can at least keep it on in your inventory while doing other stuff...

Btw, I'm playing F1 now and I've noticed that a couple of references you've made to F1 regarding F2 peculiarities don't really make sense. For one thing, the Geiger Counter selling bug is exactly the same in F1, and the merchant you told me about who didn't know what the GC was doesn't exist. :P I don't remember if it was you who asked about the printing doohikey, but in any case it's located in the Gunrunners building in the Boneyard and it just sits there.

RE: Guide updated

haha, i wasn't thinking that you mean karma values for each quest and stuff, i was thinking that you were saying about how much karma you need to change to another karma level (like -1000 for demon spawn) and that was already in there, so i didn't have a clue what ye were talking about. oh well.

RE: Guide updated

Here's something about a v1.00 bug that I received by email:

"i'd just like to make a note that before the patch if you chose the perk "here and now" at a higher level, you would gain a level for every 3 level you had already gotten. so if you got it at level 15 you would get 5 or 6 free levels. however you would miss out on any perks you would get from those levels. ( and you would probably get more than 99 skill points )"

I've never heard of this before, so I wanted to check if anyone knows of it. Starseeker?

Btw, I found a couple of those typos I let slip by, "assasinate" and "precentage"... tut, tut. :)

RE: Guide updated

I want to say that your Guide is the best thing that ever happened to all Fallout 2 fans (besides the game itself;p). And ... i think there are some things that need to be corrected (or meaby Im blind or wrong): You write that Rock, Gold Nugget and Uranium Ores are for throwing only. I think that you can also punch with them and you use unarmed skill not meele like some people think...
And there are no item prices (or shall we call it values), why? BTW: Some people think that prices are modified by barter, but barter modifies only buying price, the selling price is always the same.
...
Oh, and you forgot about lightened flare in the weapon section;)

Hm, well, that should be easily verifiable at any rate.

>And there are no item prices
>(or shall we call it
>values), why?

I don't think it's that important... if you have to decide what to loot and what to leave behind, "hog the guns" seems to work as a rule of thumb, and it's pretty intuitive. Besides, the number you really want is selling price divided by weight. I've seen a list of items with names colour-coded to reflect this. Pretty nice, but I'm not doing that. :)

>BTW: Some people
>think that prices are modified

Yep, this is noted in one place in the guide.

>Oh, and you forgot about lightened
>flare in the weapon section;)
>

Believe me, I'd have added a separate entry if it had had a different name, such as "Lit Flare", but since they have both identical name and (as far as I know) identical stats, there's only the note at the bottom of the weapons table that they seem to work the same. Feels kinda redundant to have two items with identical data in all columns. :) (Dynamite, Geiger Counters and so on are technically two different items as well when turned on or off, with slightly different graphics, just like the Flare.)

Btw, I also write there that Rocks and Flares have melee damage added to them, but I now know that it doesn't work like that in F1, so I'm wondering if they added that in F2 or if I was just imagining.

GameFAQs is pretty good, although it's rather filled with Final Fantasy Fuckwits. Not just anyone who likes the game, I'm talking about the people who just load up the game to masturbate over Tifa's obvious polygons. Ignoring those people, the place is fairly complete and has a great listing, and it's not easy to maintain. CJayC does a good job on it.

As for the formatting, that is where Perl shines again. All I need to know is your formatting style, and I can do substitutions on the guide in about .003 seconds of computational time to chew through that size of an HTML document and strip out the HTML and replace the BR tags with a newline break for text files, same thing with the P tags. The stars could be changed from the grahics to multiple * systems. All it takes is knowing that needs to be stripped, what needs to be replaced, and it can be done easily
