Making a melee or unarmed character

What are the differences between choosing melee weapons and choosing unarmed? What are the perks associated with each skill? What are the coolest melee weapons, and the coolest 'unarmed' weapons? Do your punches and kicks change when your skills get really high? If so, how does this work?

How plausible is it to make a character that doesn't use guns? I've been thinking about tagging energy weapons as well as either melee or unarmed, but if it's reasonable not to, I'd rather go for a pure close-range combat character. It seems like it'd be hard to run up to each guy you want to kill because you'd run out of action points quickly. If anyone has made such a character and could give me some advice, I'd be very receptive to it.

Thanks!

RE: Making a melee or unarmed character

Lots of people have done just unarmed and/or melee successfully for the whole game.

Unarmed attacks do get better as you get higher skills and level up.

The best unarmed weapons are the power fist and mega power fist. The mega power fist is stronger than every melee weapon as well. The super sledge and super cattle prod are the best melee weapons, but the mega power fist does more damage.

So unarmed is probably better to use than melee.

Unarmed characters don't change much from normal characters when you make them, but you don't need any perception (although you'll miss out on a couple of quests with low perception, but that doesn't really matter).

If ShadowLord reads this he'll probably post his HtH character for you.

For traits, gifted is good, and finesse is ok for HtH because you need critical hits to knock out and cripple and stuff. Definitely DON'T take fast shot.

As for perks, i would choose awareness first (if you have enough perception to get it), and later on choose bonus HtH attacks, bonus HtH damage doesn't really make much difference. You can choose the perks yourself, anyway.

Anyway, you can complete the games without guns. You can complete the game without killing anything but the end boss if you want.

RE: Making a melee or unarmed character

I completed the game with a pure melee character, quite easily too. And the end was easy, just got all the help I could get and I didn't have to do jack. Bwahahaha. Anywho... Its very plausable to make a non-gun character.

"Three guns are better than two."

RE: Making a melee or unarmed character

A good thing to have for melee or unarmed char. is high strenght and agility. High charisma is also not bad because you can have a lot of NPC's that can use guns to back up your char. It is possible to end the game this way. You do not have to do anything to kill the end boss if you do not want to.

RE: Making a melee or unarmed character

Unarmed is best. Think of it... 4 targeted punches to the groin with a Mega Power Fist... and when their down, then punches to the eyes... oh yeah.

RE: Making a melee or unarmed character

Actually an unarmed type is very easy, you don't need to worry about ammo... Med to High Str, Low Per, Med to High End, Cha, Luck, Int to taste.

Other usefull Traits:

Heavy Handed - makes begining of game very easy, but harder later because of less crits untill you get slayer.

Small Frame - you don't need to cary much anyway

Finess - Mixed bag again, but more crits, Don't take if you take heavy handed (cancels each other out)

Gifted - Duh!

Good Natured - Always good, especially if you plan on only using one type of combat.

Chem Resistant - Take Jet, DON'T get addicted (only 50% chance) Woo Hoo!

Jinxed - My personal favorite, watch all your enemies loose their ammo, weapons etc, and stumble around stunned giving you time to beat them to a bloody pulp. Don't take if you plan on having a large entourage.

Good Perks:

Bonus Move - two of these and thats 4 yes count them 4 extra action points to catch up to your victu... er... oponents.

Bonus HTH Attack - woo hoo now that mega power fist attack is only 2 action points!

Silent Death - deal Double! yes Double normal damage with a sucessfull sneak and attack from the back!

Slayer - Crit EVERY time.

I'd suggest unarmed over mele, unarmed weapons are better, you can get alot of free unarmed training (Arroyo, Klamath, New Reno, Sierra Army Depot, San Francisco), and there are a couple large unarmed quests.

If on the other hand you just want to knock people 5 or 10 squares go with mele.

RE: Making a melee or unarmed character

Forget that, with luck of 10 you have good chance of crits even before slayer, and even better if you aim for the groin. I knocked the Dragon out in 1 groin hit and then just beat him to death.

RE: Making a melee or unarmed character

Just like whitechocobo666 said, here's my HtH character:
ST: 8
PE: 2
EN: 10
CH: 2
IN: 9
Ag: 10
LU: 6
Traits: Gifted, Good Natured
Tag Skills: Unarmed, Melee Weapons, Speech
This is the best HtH character I ever had. Use the Sledgehammer and Spiked Knuckles, and then replace them with the Super Sledge and Mega Power Fist respectively. Good perks are: Bonus HtH Damage, Slayer, Bonus Move(Essential to get close quickly) and Lifegiver. Take Lifegiver whenever you get the chance, it gives amazing HP per level. Note that the special Unarmed attacks really suck and should only be used when you HAVE to. I could consistently kill Tough Deatclaws(310 hp) with a single Mega Power Fist to the eyes, but even with Piercing Kick I could only do like 20 damage.

RE: Making a melee or unarmed character

Thanks for all the good advice, this has been most helpful.

RE: Making a melee or unarmed character

Perception is good though, for sequence... if your sequence is really low and you fight a group of high sequencers then a lot of times they get 2 rounds on you before you get another turn the first time :(

RE: Making a melee or unarmed character

I think that combination of ranged and meele colud have it's charms also if you use supersledge (or other hammers) you could sweep your oponents away from you when they get close, and use your guns when they are further away.
