New guide

In case anyone is still waiting for it you can find my walkthrough at

http://user.tninet.se/~wcw454p/fallout2.html

The html file is about 500 kb. If you think that's a lot I've made a zip file called

http://user.tninet.se/~wcw454p/fall2.zip

which is about 170 kb and should hopefully unzip correctly.

Comments and typo reports are of course welcome! I hope you'll enjoy it. Flames prompted by my character building preferences can be directed to this board to stimulate discussion. ;)

RE: Some stuff....

You can take stuff from locked lockers from NCR, VC, or any other places without getting into a blood bath with the local authorities. I assumed everyone already knew this, so I never brought it up, but I guess you never bother to figure it out. I was surprised to see a item collector like you(me too) didn't notice this tiny little thing to get to all those goodies.

This "trick" works best only if you have 2 or more NPCs with you, but it all depends on the situation, like the distance, your sneak skill, lockpick skill, and etc..., so, make your own call.

The distance is usually the most important factor here. If you are very close to the observer, like in NCR police station(with abundent goodies, with at least 2 metal armors and more guns I was able to carry on myself), make sure you have 3 NPCs with you, because that tend to make things easier. Ask your NPCs to follow you at the close range(up close and personal) then move yourself so that your NPCs block you from the observers' direct line of sight. Once they have blocked you at least partially, turn on your sneak skill and pick those locks then loot to your hearts contend. I got the idea to do this from stealing way too many times. I figured that if you get a bonus to steal(and sneak) something from someone if you are not in the direct line of sight from the person, then you should be able to do it with other things as well. I was even able to use this trick to pick the lock on the desk DIRECTLY in FRONT of Stark in VC cop station, and take what was inside. I also have find out that if you have low lockpick skills, you can try to "Steal" stuff from locked drawers or tables, but it may not always work for some reason. It won't work on lockers.

Happy Looting, and don't hoard too much items.

Oops, before I forget, here is a general recommendation I give to people on selling:

You should only sell something to the merchants if they already have it in their wares, so the game will then count them as part of the stock, and it'll stop the game from creating new item files. The only exception I make is that if nobody carries this junk around, but it's worth something, I'll trade it in a place where there is the least amount of junk in the map, and I would always go back to the same guy if I get that item again.

Just wanted to throw that out for your "perfec" collection.:D

I'm pretty sure there's a brief note about using Sneak and/or Steal to get into guarded containers, but I'll add the stuff about positioning and use of NPC:s, thanks! I actually have taken the stuff from Stark's table etc., but after some unpleasant experiences where critters would seemingly "retroactively" catch me stealing (à la Baldur's Gate), I decided I wouldn't make a habit of it. In this game there's no Charm Person spell you can use to placate critters once they turn hostile!

Interesting, I'll check it out.

Actually I think you only have to worry about the items bug if you tend to hoard *all* items like I did in my first few games. In my last game I dropped all used up quest items, but I sold pretty much every kind of generic item to both shopkeepers in SF (trading only with one table in each shop, though - otherwise that's effectively 4 heavily stocked shops in one location :)) during the course of the game, and I still never even got the blacked out Skilldex button thingy that comes before the onset of the too many items bug. So probably this bug is only some kind of divine punishment exclusively intended for us extreme item hoarders. :)

also- if you have a handgun when at the wright kids, trade it to a teammate before talking to them (also trade your stuff to teammates before "gettin' it on" in modoc or else it is much harder to retrieve from the ground)

a good place (for the pityless) to test the NCR serum is on the drunk in the broken hills se holding cells. no one is there to witness it.

enclave puzzle/barrier level, section 9- I don't think you mentioned that you can use a tool on the wires to disable the electric floors

Let's see...

It turns out CH 9 is required for both genders. I guess I must have been more charismatic when I was playing a male character.

I thought dropping or trading away handguns in New Reno was perhaps too obvious to spell out, but the Modoc thing is a good point that I overlooked completely, thanks!

There are several others that work just as well, actually. The strange thing about Elmo is that he sticks around even if you pull off the evil mine plot stuff thingy.

It says you can use Traps and Lockpick on the doors, did you mean something else? I've never heard before that you could actually disable the floors themselves. I'll go look for wires to manipulate.

Do keep the comments coming, they're appreciated.

RE: New guide

I'm getting it now...

Try and make it a text file and put it on gamefaqs.com?

RE: Some stuff....

I mean a WIRE on the WALL in the section north of the exit

repair it and the FLOOR is no longer ELECTRIFIED

No need for the capitals, I figured it out easily enough once I knew what to look for. This has to be a rare piece of info since it's not in any walkthrough nor anywhere in the functioning part of this board.

Don't they accept html files? Converting it to text might be tricky with the tables, coloured stars and all. I suppose the NMA walkthroughs section would be one obvious place to post it in any case.

RE: New guide

So, did you check out all the "stuff" you couldn't loot before?:D Some of them are very good because they are early enough in the game for them to be useful, and at least you can trade them for something you need. I had so much ammo(shotgun in particular) that the only ammo I had to buy before SF is .223 FMJ, and the energy cells. I could afford at least one Metal Armor Mark II, and one Leather Armor II by the time I hit VC without active leveling.

Anyway, it's probably not worth it to bother with gamefaqs.com, because they are overly commericialized right now. Your precious walkt. will only help them gather more customer info and sell more stuff. Actually, they already have lots walk/guides on FO2, so they may not even accept yours because it's not a new game. But, it is good exposure for your guide, so take your pick.

RE: WOW! Jäklars vad mäktig guide!

The biggest one they have is like 150kb, and that ones way bigger than that...

You're actually supposed to give credit everytime you steal something from another walkthrough (like when you do those quote things)...

But anyway, Stimpaks are 10-20 and not 5-20...

What's your definition of stealing in this context? If I read something I didn't know in 3 different walkthroughs and then go and do the actual thing in the game and then make my own description of what happens, have I stolen anything? Should I give credit to those 3 walkthroughs for helping me find thing X faster and easier than I might have otherwise? As I point out in the guide, no one (not even Interplay) owns the facts of what happens in the game; you can only own your own presentation of them, and this is mine. The places where I give specific credit is usually where I've heard about something from one source only or because I felt like it anyway. Maybe I should simply omit the word "steal" from the guide so no one will think I actually did cut and paste anything.

Ironically the closest thing I've come to cutting and pasting was item numbers and NPC HP numbers I initially transcribed from various sources. I've verified most of them myself since, but not the Stimpak numbers for some reason. Interestingly, this made me think I should check the Hypo as well, and it turns out it heals 75-100 HP. The only thing I've ever read on the Hypo is either that it heals to full HP or that it heals 75 HP like a Super Stimpak.

Of course - they're just lying there, they're worthless, you have to pick them up!

RE: btw do you like rocks? =D

ok i just wrote this huge message and erased it by mistake.... so here it goes again *sigh*

ok, in your walkthrough Per, in the section about Arroyo i think you left out a couple things. Such as durring the quest of saving nagors dog, you said that the gecko's couldnt give you good experience. well the little known zuger-trick is that you can "steal then plant" over and over again on the gecko's because they have very little perception, and even if you do get caught stealing from them, they dont do anything about it. its a great way to lvl up starting characters. :D

---ALSO---

i *THINK* you can recieve 2 sharpened spears from the bridgekeeper by getting 2 flints, you can get 2 flints by stealing the flint from your aunt. THEN trading the 3 healing powders for it. *I THINK* =] dont wanna test cuz then i'd have to reinstall fallout2... hope this helps your perfected walkthrough perman =]

RE: New guide

Nice guide I must say Per... (Good thing us straight out gamers have people nice enough to put all the info about a game into a file... Otherwise some of us may have NEVER found the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch ;-) )
