Secret of the Robber Caves

Hey falllout fans!

I'm not sure if anyone will be reading this since Fallout 2 is such an old (but classic) game by todays standards (hopefully this message board is still used!) but decided to bring this up anyway, hopefullly someone can help me.

Not sure if many of you have noticed, but occasionally when you fight a random encounter with the message appearing "you hear sounds coming from the cave nearby" - you enter the cave and are confronted by HEAPS of immature deathclaws, scorpions, molerats or whatever, inside.

Every once in a while however, you enter one of these caves.....and find about 20-30 Robbers clad in combat armor - each wielding weapons like YK4B Pulse Rifles, Turbo Plasma Rifles, Mega Power Fists and sometimes(JOY!)Gauss Rifles with ammo you can grab.
Needless to say, it's a really challenging fight(great fun wasting them though) and since you stand to make $200K+ from selling off all their weapons, it's an encounter i'd love to find more often at high level!

Finding this encounter seems to happen at random only (I've entered so many darn caves to prove that) although I've found out a few things so far: If you encounter 'Claim Jumpers' just north/east of Redding it seems to help your chances, or encountering 'Aliens' south/east of Navarro, both times in the most moutainous regions possible.

I've made sure my character has 10 luck, Scout & Explorer perks, and is at a very high level (35+), and even set the Game Difficulty to 'EASY' in an effort to try to find these guys more often, but nothing seems to make much difference - ultimately it looks like just luck weather or not a cave has them, as opposed to Immature Deathclaws or Geckos usually.

If ANYONE knows of a way to boost my chances of finding this encounter (or even getting it everytime, better yet) please reply! It's such a great way of getting Gauss ammo when there's none around if nothing else, any tips are welcome please!

[font size=1" color="#FF0000]LAST EDITED ON May-23-01 AT 08:34PM (GMT)[p]You'd be surprised at how popular this board is! I know I was when I first came here... Well, I guess the Tactics board is the most popular one now, but I think this is the best board, nonetheless. :-) Stick around, there's always something interesting happening. :-)

As for your question... Well, I can say that it is indeed a very, very rare encounter - I've gotten it perhaps twice in all the time I have been playing the game. And yes, I have finished it many times, and I have a lot of different characters. (Two characters above level 32) All I can say is that you should propably set the game difficulty to HARD instead of easy, since I'd imagine that the game considers that a hard encounter. As for getting the encounter with sh*tloads of geckos or baby deathclaws, that's much more common. With my latest character (8 LU, no special perks, outdoorsman 20%) I've already gotten those encounter 3 times! The first time I got the gecko cave I was at such a low level that they killed my entire party - and easily, too! :-) I'm playing at Normal difficulty.

I also got the deathclaw cave somewhere near Redding (twice) with my latest character. The encounter had only wolves in it. Judging by these two facts, I'd say that you have higher chances of getting it just by travelling in the 9-24 squares surrounding Redding (see amazing picture!:-)), regardless of the encounter.

x x o x x

o = Redding
x = square with possibly high chance of cave encounter

Any other ideas?

RE: Secret of the Robber Caves

Yeah, know what you mean Saboteur - it usually takes me around 1 hour (realtime sadly) of deliberate random encounter/cave searching to find this encounter if I'm lucky.

Interesting point you make though...my outdoorsman for all my games (my current game is about 15th time I've played through roughly) is always 100-150% (even without the smiley bug in v1.02), I'm now wondering weather or not a LOWER outdoorsman is better for finding this encounter???.....

Have also noticed by the way, that the encounter that is OUTSIDE the cave may effect the encounter inside, with regard to number of enemies & layout of the cave. One time I encountered Aliens near Navarro (a pretty tough encounter relatively) & the cave contained like 40(!!!!) Immature Deathclaws.
Leads me to think that the tougher the outside encounter, the more enemies may be inside the cave itself.....

Another wierd thing which I should have mentioned in my original post - sometimes the "Robber Cave" is huge, with two exits and 20-30 Robbers inside, other times it may be a single screen sized cave with only 10-15 Robbers. Regardless, the 3 chests inside always seem to contain around 1000 gold, though sometimes a weapon or two & 80 gold instead.

Has anyone found any other type of "Robber Caves"?
If so in which world-map locations please?

RE: Secret of the Robber Caves

well i have an interesting story about these caves..
i once found them with a preety dud character..
i guess there were about 30 of them in the cave..
it was a huge cave though ill tell ya what..
anyway..
none of these guys attacked me..
like, they ran up, but they couldnt attack, except for the ones with mega power fists or whatever..
none with guns attacked...
so i just cruised through picking off the powerfist guys..
then getting the other guys..

anyone else had a similar expierience?
i beleive i posted about this long long ago..
my name woulda been mildew..
for a more detailed story.. look up that message..
id assume that that post was made 4+ months ago

RE: Secret of the Robber Caves

Speaking of Robbers i had an odd experience there once. I had cleared out the Robbers in the cave but theres was 1 that was stuck in the wall. It was in the wall and walking around. Then when i walked close enough (i was sneaking) It started combat, then walked out of the wall and shot at me. I shot him in the eyes with my gauss rifle and killed him. Just wanted to know if anyone else has seen this as it has happened to me at least twice. Only once starting combat.

RE: Secret of the Robber Caves

Yep, had the same experience... In fact, I think that's happened in every robber cave I ever encountered! (And hooray, found another one just a while ago :-) - even though just a small one.)

RE: Secret of the Robber Caves

I've had similar experiences. The robbercaves are bugged sometimes so the robbers with ranged weapons won't attack you.
