Unarmed Characters

Today in my new(est) game, i went through the Military Base. Mutants always give me a tough time. And, i have not played an unarmed character through NCR before.. So. Im wondering how unarmed characters handle mutants or other units with big or powerful guns.. Seems like they would tear you apart. Especially with flamethrowers.. Do you hit and retreat or something? As far as i can figure you would get torn apart if you got up close and personal with about 5 flame-throwered mutants.. Although maybe building an unarmed character would end up being able to take care of it because of the stats it uses? Also, what % do you usually get unarmed up to? and what other skills do you use to accompany it? Ive never played a successful unarmed char but im interested in it, so...

Replies are appreciated, obviously

Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. Then they'll be a mile away--and barefoot.

RE: Unarmed Characters

unarmed characters need both high endurance, and high agility
and thats basically it for primary stats (well str helps) =]
and how do they survive mutants with flamethrowers.. stimpacks? heh, you just need alot of ap. by the end of the game my unarmed char had 12action points, +4 to movement (bonus move)
thats 4 aimed punches per turn =]

RE: Unarmed Characters

Hey, just like zuger said, a lot of stimapks and super stimpaks. I just finished my second time through with a melee character with no npc, and combat for the most part was not fun. Not fun at all! Grr...

Good perks are bonus hth attacks, bonus hth damage, bonus move so you can chase down critters with guns, and livegiver. Also lots of luck. Heh!

7 str
5 per
9 end
2 cha
3 int
9 agi
5 luc

or i could go 8 str and 4 luc... what do you guys think?

with gifted and fast shot as traits.. Fast shot works with unarmed, right? Otherwise i would pick something else.. How does that sound to you expereicned HtHers?

RE: Unarmed Characters

Pretty good. Fast shot could be a problem as against creatures like deathclaws, most normal attacks will do hardly any damage. I needed to target shots to actually be effective; but it can work. Perception isn't as important as normal because you want to be close to your enimies, and is somewhat unnessary since you won't be using firearms. Intelligence, as always, is important. Though, your character seems fine. Different; but fine.

RE: Unarmed Characters

Drugs are also a good thing for an HtH character. Buffout and psycho to name two.

RE: Unarmed Characters

im pretty sure fast shot only works with guns... otherwise you could get a 1 ap punch =\

str is good, perception should be an even number, endurance should be even number also, intel is needed higher to speak properly, i prefer 10 agility.. and luck needs to be even number for supreme effectivity =]

>or i could go 8 str

you can always up luck later from the zeta scan, so put it to 4 cuz then you can still get better criticals (after the zeta scan) which is very useful for unarmed

both bad ideas
1) gifted with your intel will give you 6skillpoints per lvl (OUCH)
2) fast shot only works with guns, but it also makes you unable to aim shot with your fists and feet
(so both bad idea for your current char)

RE: Unarmed Characters

Thats a really stupid thing. Fast Shot only lowers the AP cost with guns, but it doesn't allow you to use aimed anywhere.

i like those better now, AND i followed most of your tips. With Gifted it will be

8 str
6 per
9 end
3 cha
6 int
10 agi
5 luc

or maybe i already counted gifted in, i dont remember :P.. in that case ill take per down by 1 and move agi up by 1 so im 4 per and 10 agi

>both bad ideas

Gifted is my favorite perk - i think ill go with it anyhow :P.. most useful in my opinion.

ya my b i was thinkin kamikaze was the one where you couldnt aim shots. so maybe ill just go with bloody mess :) .. or MAYBE finesse.. ill think about it.

thanks for the tips i looked over my stats and i like em a lot better now :P

RE: Unarmed Characters

From my experience, the best hand to hand fighters are the finesse fighters, the ones who do the most critical hits. The beauty of finesse HtH is that targeting a specific part of the body and scoring a critical hit will alter the targets abilities. If you target the arm of a guy holding a flamer and you break his arm, he cant use it anymore. You can break people's legs; one leg will slow him down, both will drop him to the floor permanently. Critical hits in the eyes can cause instant death, and to the groin will cause the target to fall down. My favorite experience is in San Fran, fighting Lo Pan and breaking both of his arms before he pulls out his pistol, so he cant even use it! Then I sock him in the groin until he's dead. He deserved it... So, stats go like this:

ST: 5 (surprisingly unimportant)
PE: whatever
EN: whatever
CH: whatever
IN: whatever
AG: 9 (only 2 aimed punches right now, but with bonus HtH, 3, plus agility module plus however many action boys you want)
LK: 10 (base 10% critical hit, plus 10% from finesse, plus 15% from more critical hits = 35% critical hit. Plus, when you get slayer you now have a critical hit every turn.)

Finesse
Anything else, I use gifted

Unarmed (duh)
And two more of your choice.

Thats my input.

RE: Unarmed Characters

i made a char with unarmed as his primary choice and just ran through the game quickest game i ever played. once you get power gloves and bonus hth attack and damage. for perks i had silent running, and death. also slayer. Hoorigan was easy to. I punched him and knock him out so i kept doing shots to the eyes. good str and aglity is what you need. . took gifted. i always take gifted. didnt use drugs either. and i had no npc's.
for stats they were
str 7- it went to 10 with power armor
en 6
pe 6-7 chip upgrade
ch 6-7 chip upgrade
in 6-7 chip upgrade
ag 10
lk 6-7 upgrade from hubolist in ncr
you get like 4 or 5 attacks in one turn. cant remember so long ago

RE: Unarmed Characters

i dont put my PE too low cuz your sequence goes down real low. and thats not good =] i usually just bastardize my charisma or luck =]

RE: Unarmed Characters

I have a character with 10 strength, 8 agility, a mega power fist and 260% for unarmed, yet I have to yet to do any damage agaisnt horrigan. I get criticals and knock out his eye and everything, but it does no damage. whats up with that?

RE: Unarmed Characters

hmm? what level are you? when i took on horrigan i was lvl 24+ with slayer perk and such, and every hit did about 30 damage (even when not aimed shot) and i played on the hardest setting too... maybe you could put it on easy mode? i dont know whats wrong.

RE: Unarmed Characters

>I get criticals and knock out his eye and everything, but it does

It might be a bug. I've had situations like that before where I unload on a Raider at point blank range with my trusty Vinidicator, knocking him down, critically hitting for no damage. He just got up and said "Ouch." Four more burst, but the SOB wouldn't die. I got killed, needless to say.
