Yes. I beat Contra 3 on all three difficulty settings without cheating. Screw the up,up,down, down crap. As for the first Contra, my NES just adores the color gray and will display that love quite proudly at random times.

It has a lot to do with just maneuvering properly, if you can run away the right way then everything is cheese.

Well I did beat the one on Genesis about 12 years ago if I remember correctly. It wasn't Hard Corps edition though.

My proudest achievement was beating the Strike Force Cobra on Commodore 64 without cheating some 16 years ago. Nothing compares to that agony and sweet feeling of victory.

After that comes that comes Fallout 2 on Iron Man mode in one sitting.

And finally finishing Guardian Legend some 16 years ago too. Which is quite an accomplishment considering I was 11 years old back then :)

Beating Rick Dangerous and Final Fight, no cheats.
Getting anywhere far in Transarctica was also a major accomplishment. Such an awesome game, and that opening music...

Vault Dweller: That mission is at Wissenheim? Forgive my failing memory here, but I last played the game when it was new. The way I did it, I either skipped the last mission(s) and went on to Zhufbar (never tried to go straight to Loren), or that I did complete it, only to find my forces so weakened by it that even the Zhufbar missions were hard. The only memory I have of the Wissenheim missions was that the artillery was essential.

As for tough game achievements? Having only three missions left to complete in Syndicate: American Revolt. I actually know a guy that completed it, and so far he's the only one.

Completing all five worlds of Rick Dangerous 2 in one sitting. Taught me to hate memory-based frustration games, which is why I Wanna Be The Guy means very little to me.

And of course, "completing" Captive on the PC. This doesn't sound like that much of an achivement, until you realise that the PC conversion was a botched job, meaning you always got less XP than you should, so by the time you reached the third base you were up against vastly superior forces and constantly strapped for cash. If anyone wants to have a go at Captive, skip the PC version and grab an Amiga/Atari ST emulator for the job.

seriously. Thats EPIC. Blows everything away.

Schwarzenegger, Stalone. I would have watched that if they made a Contra movie (when they have been in their best time). Cant be worse then Tango & Cash.

Though I think to beat some Amiga games is a accomplishment considering how fucking hard some have been !

How comes whe managed to beat the crap out of such games ? I mean was the tolerance regarding frustration higher back then or something ? I mean com on what some see today as "hard" in a few games ... pfff :P

Hey anyone remember Wolfchild for the Amiga ? Or Chambers of Shaolin ?

I guess the reason is that the games back then didn't have any "elaborate" AI trying to mimic human, just difficult obstacles to get by, but any CIV game on the hardest difficulty is pretty frustrating and hard even today.
The training part of Chambers of Shaolin was the hardest, especially the kick the metal ball one, but succeeding in it was so gratifying! Then the fights were fairly easy.

Final Fight with how many credits? I played Final Fight on those large devices (I think they are called Arcades), and the furthest that I could get with one credit was the fat cop fight.

As for mine proud gaming achievements ... I remember playing Commandos without saving (and finishing a lot of missions). That was really tough and frustrating at some points.

^Those fake Contra trailers are hilarious.

Bill and Lance are actually based off Schwarzenegger and Stallone IIRC.

hence why a movie with them would have been kick ass

Imagine a cross over between Rambo II, Phantom Commando and Aliens 2 of some sort.

Oh this reminds me, I did beat the Hard Corps for Genesis. I actually beat it with different characters, which freaking amazes me now because I can't even get past the first level.

Also, one thing I recently realized was that I never actually beat Super Mario Bros for NES. That game was freaking hard.

I've beaten every Metal Gear Solid game on the highest difficulty without killing anyone and usually within some arbitrary time limit.

Geez, that fucking chase scene in the Czech Republic in MGS4 was a fucking bitch.

The Most Difficult - Frustrating Games

There are threads dedicated to best, worst, most frightening, etc - this one will cover those games that the players found mind numbingly difficult and frustrating. It could be just a boss fight, or some particular level - (let’s leave out the complaints about the controls, save options, etc) …just to make life easier for the readers, if possible attach a small image of the game. Sometimes these games are the most memorable, for all the wrong reasons, but most of the best games had their stressful moments.

I’ll start off with a game that almost drove me to the point of smashing my PS1, and forced me into buying the actual strategy guide (cost me $25 bloody bucks)… “Alundra”. I’m not saying the game is rubbish, because it isn’t, I loved it, but it has extremely difficult and frustrating puzzles. Repeating one section 20 times wasn’t uncommon, and the boss fights were epic…but the worst part was jumping on moving platforms that required Olympic skills and one fuckup and it was back to the start. :irked:

X-Com: Terror From The Deep, Ninja Gaiden: Black, several of the Mega Man games... those are some of the most frustratingly hard but also enjoyable games I've played.

There was already a thread about this IIRC. I've said it there, and I'll agree with the above poster. I Wanna be The Guy... And no, I still haven't been able to beat the final boss yet.
