How did you discover Fallout ?

Hate me for this, but I discovered Fallout through Fallout 3. It didn't take much for me to want to go and discover the roots of this series, so I picked up a trilogy pack (Fallout, FO2, and Tactics) on Steam and played until the sun came up.

After that, it all went downhill in terms of addiction. Went and finished the first Fallout, dug right into the second, and then went onto Tactics and BoS, which were disappointing after the time I spent with Fallout and FO2. Of course, then I went back and did it all again.

Probably the best time I've ever had with a series of games.
 
Fallout 2 was my first dive into RPG's, actually. Played it in early 2002. Found the box under my brother's desk when I was like 8. Didn't "get it" til I was 10.
 
There are two major computer games magazines in Czech republic where I'm from: SCORE and LEVEL. I was buying SCORE, because it seemed like those guys were always ahead, sometimes had free games on their CD, funny writing and reviews...

But then LEVEL put FALLOUT 1 on their CD for free and translated into Czech, which made it very accessible to Czech audience (I fought my way through the English version though, wanting the original experience).

The rivalry between the magazines increased and that's when they both started putting really awesome games on their CD's, it was like a big choice every month :) You could tell SCORE was pissed though, because FALLOUT just topped it all... Someone suggested they do FALLOUT 2 and they said that was impossible, too soon etc.

And within a month LEVEL put out FALLOUT 2 on a bonus double-CD! Also fully translated into Czech (which I again sacrificed in order to learn English better). Madness. Still supporting SCORE for their good writing and professional reviews, I bought LEVEL with a bit of shame, but that's how I got to both Fallouts...
 
My rich cousin used to go to the US about once a year and bring cool games with him. Amongst them, FO2. One look into the Enclave's power armor in the cover and i was hooked. He lent it to me and twelve years later, i haven't returned it :D
 
My first experience with Fallout was actually in 1997 when I had gotten an issue of PC Gamer that included Fallout 1 on the demo disc. I remember playing it a few times and not being overly impressed so it was uninstalled and forgotten. Between then and when Fallout 3 was released, I don't think I had ever thought about the series again, though I may or may not have known there was a sequel (Fallout 2) and a couple spin-offs.

Come 2008 I was working with a bunch of guys who were really into this game called Fallout 3. I didn't really know anything about it but they kept telling me how awesome it was and how I should go get it. When I didn't get it they persisted and even lent me a copy to try. At this point I had just finished Mass Effect 1 so I had some free time to try something else.

From the moment I started the game I was pretty much hooked. It was that 50s atmosphere. That blasted wasteland with shadows of an idealistic time. Listening to Galaxy New Radio while walking through a scorched white picket fence neighbourhood. Seeing homes frozen in time from when the bombs dropped. The skeleton of a mother holding her child. Everything in the game added up to an experience that gripped me on some sub-conscious level.

I've easily spent around 300 hours+ in Fallout 3. There's nothing left for me to do, I've done every quest. Maxed out every stat/skill. Unlocked every radio station. But some nights I'll pour myself a whiskey and coke, put on my own 50s music (because I've heard GNR hundreds of times probably) and just walk around. Looking for something I might have missed.

After a while of playing Fallout 3, I wanted to go back to play Fallout 1 and Fallout 2. I figured I owed the series some justice and wanted to play through the originals to see what they were like. I had of course by this point, read numerous threads and seen numerous individuals argue that Fallout 3 was terrible and that the originals were far better. This egged me on to try them even more, since if something could be better than the game I already loved, I should be playing it.

I did go back and play them though my experience was some what disappointing (and different than many others on the forum). I felt like I had to make a conscious effort to "keep going" in both games and usually couldn't play more than an hour or two at a time. It just lacked that feel, the atmosphere (for me) was not as engaging. There were many times however that I had thought "I can see how someone would really enjoy this" and truly I did enjoy it enough to finish them.

I suspect my experience is in direct conflict with a lot of members on the forum but the sense I get is that it's trendy to hate Fallout 3. I can't be part of the trend unfortunately. But that is my "origin story" and how I came to play Fallout.
 
Phew, I think it was around 1999 or 2000, when I bought Fallout 1 at a flea market. I installed it and I was hooked. Played it again and again since that day. Actually, I don't think I've replayed any other game as often as Fallout.
After playing Fallout 2, I was waiting eagerly for Fallout 3 and went crazy when I read about Fallout:Tactics. Curiously, I played it a few times at a friend's place and never got around getting deeper into it.
I guess I'll buy it soon, when I get around buying the Trilogy.
When I heard that Bethesda were going to produce Fallout 3, I was pretty pissed, as they pretty much ruined my other favourite RPG series just a little earlier. So I ignored Fallout 3, but eventually bought it last year in the game of the year edition as I thought that it couldn't be that bad, all the critics hailed it and I thought: "Oh well, maybe the FPS gameplay will be fun".
Should have saved the money.
 
Heh. I remember being in 2nd grade. My friend had a pirated and horribly mutilated (no videos or talking heads) copy of a funny game with awesome graphics. That was the original Fallout on a scratched and battered disc.
I used to go to his place to play it 'til I finally got a computer myself. In the following years I learned all my English and cunnilingus from there :clap: Soon I saw Fallout 2 on a shelf in a PC soft store (back then there were no game stores), but I had no money on me. A month later my cousin bought a pirated copy with all the music and vids and everything. I was hooked for life.

Now I have original copies of the original Fallout and Fallout 2 packed away somewhere in a cardboard box. I play them from images on my hard drive :roll:
 
Years ago as a little kid (maybe 6 or 7 ) my parents bought me a videogame magazine and on the back cover there was an ad for Fallout 1. it had a family in gas masks and some screen shots. I was reminded of this when Fallout 3 was comig out and I found my old magazine and nostalgia'd. after the release of 3 i went on GOG and bought the first two and just last night i downloaded the Fallout 2 Restoration mod :D . For the past couple of weeks I've been playing alot of the first 2 and can't wait to get started on the restoration
 
I discovered Fallout through Fallout 3, thought it was an awsome game, then bought the Fallout collection featuring Fallout 1, 2 and Tatics. Played Fallout 1 and got hooked.
 
My friend got the first one when I got Fallout 3, he told me about how realistic it was and I got both on an offer and started playing them. Good investment.
 
I first saw the preview for it in some shitty TV show about videogames in 1997 in a very small town in south-western Russia. Few months later, the magazine I used to read back than(game-exe for you, russkis) had a glowing review of it, so when I saw it at my local pirate game kiosk, I bought it. Then F2 came and I bought it as well, first, a really shitty, software translated version, then a really good one. Since then I've replayed F3 roughly every 2 years or so.

ON a side note, I still have my pirated F2, along with a receipt. MCA promised he'd sign it for me, if we ever meet.

A few friends recommended Fallout 3. I was hooked. I later bought 1/2/T at gamestop on one disk. I have yet to play through them completely.
 
Haha, back when the biggest desktop HDDs were only 2,5 Gbs a friend complained that he's out of space because of a game... so I borrowed FO 2 from him.
Now I realized that I still did not return the loan.
 
A buddy recommended me the Trilogy back in 2006. Bought it, loved it, got hooked.

I guess that makes me a noob to discover fallout so late, BUT i loved the series before FO3. I think thats redeeming ^^
